Before you begin, loosen the long bolts which secure the PPF to the transmission until they have only one or two threads holding them in place, I believe there's a third, shorter bolt which you can remove completely. Place a floor jack under the junction point at the long bolts, and raise it up to the limit of the slop in the joint.

This will cause the engine to pivot forward on its mounts, which causes the back of the head to move slightly away from the firewall and frees up a bit more space to work in.
