Also, I'm working on a bikini top. Using the spare top I cut off my donor car last year to make a pattern, will sew up a final version once I'm happy with it.
Maybe in a blue/black tiger stripe ;)

I like the bikini top! That is especially tempting since I've ripped out my soft top. I had an idea to do basically the same thing with my old softtop.

Finally overran my injectors (550's). Picked up these 880's, and fpr/gauge for ultimately switching to E85. Gonna install them and retune on gas, then ethanol after I pick up a pump.

Another Miata, '92, A-pkg. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. I like the idea of a straight-6 swap, maybe even a carbed L24. Or strip it and track it n/a. Or trade it for a Jeep. Or whatever I think of next week. Paid so little for it it can sit in the driveway until I figure out what to do.

880's installed today, retuning tonight on pumpgas. Picked up an RS to replace the leaky, squeaky 1g DSM valve I've been using. Also, moved my knock sensor up the "stock" location just under the head, between 2 and 3. Hopefully won't reveal that it's blindly been knocking it's ass off for the last 2 years.

DUDE missed your updates! I actually just thought about you (i know, <3) and had to search for your thread to see if you were still going strong with the car. Glad to see it! How do you like the 595's ? I LOVE mine, but on cold roads they aren't so good. I guess I might need to wait until spring to hear what you really think about em.

Love the wheels too man, huge upgrade in aesthetics dept. Hows your little 1.6 doing with all that boost?

So far the motor has not popped and does not make any weird noises, but the trans sounds pissed off in odd numbered gears. If it grenades the 6 speed is in the garage so I'm not stressing. Tires are good, but it's still too cold to go up in the mountains and push them to see how they'll do.

As for the Greddy setup, I'm taxing that mofo. I've been playing with boost vs timing over the last couple of months so that I can find out where the edge of efficiency is. I've got the WG arm adjusted all the way down, and I shimmed it out another couple of millimeters (to about 1/4"), so now it's holding pressure pretty well. I've peaked at 19psi, tapering to 14 at redline, but I have to pull 4-5* of timing out from 4Krpm to redline (vs my 12psi map) to run it. At this point I've turned it back down to 15psi peak for only a minimal loss of airflow and maybe a little more life out of the poor bastard.

The graph below shows 12psi/high timing (green) vs 18psi/low timing (orange) pulls. Once I've got E85 in the tank I figure I'll be able to dial all the timing back into it and then some, so I ought to be able to get back that low end TQ that's missing from the high boost table, and keep adding to it up top. I just killed a tank of gas tonight logging more runs, so I may try dumping some corn in there tomorrow and see how it does.

It feels great either way, you know, for a shitty ole Greddy kit :giggle:

Currently at 13-14psi and a lot more timing, like 8* more in some places. IDCs are around 85% so I'm going to leave the boost pressure where it is. I ordered a Deatschwerks DW200 kit and have an Aeromotive fpr in the garage, so I can run more fuel through it soon.

Also, Hella/Flosser. Big improvement for $95.

MSM Bilsteins and NB tophats going in, Racelands going out.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1399844447

Edit: Well I finally got these Bilsteins mostly sorted. They were bottoming out pretty hard, and the back end was a touch stiff. I thought taller tophats were the answer, but after totally hijacking this thread for tophat info, I decided not to purchase extended hats. I picked up some taller, softer springs for the back (7"/250# Eibachs vs 6"/325# eBay specials), raised the car up about 3/4", and it feels pretty good at this point. I lost some turn-in "crispness" but will see if playing with tire pressure and/or sway bar adjustments helps that. The trade off for more control over med/large bumps mid-corner is worth it. I may end up with some ISCs but for now it's fine.

matthewdesigns 05-26-2014 12:27 PM

Flexfuel in full effect!

8 Attachment(s)
Just in case you are late to the thread, I'm running an ECU and engine harness out of a '92 Galant VR4 with tuning software called ECMLink. ECMLink offers full standalone operation of the timing and fuel, external device triggers, modular inputs for non-standard devices, etc, with a great datalogger built in. And now fully integrated GM flexfuel sensor support.

After being preoccupied with the coilover install and setup over the last couple of weekends, I finally took some time got my flexfuel sensor wired in and all the parameters set up (see two posts up for hardware install). It's pretty damn nice to not have to drag a laptop around with me on road trips anymore in case I can't find any e85 and have to switch maps. Most of the populated areas in CO have e85 readily available, but up in the mountains it's hit and miss.

The car has to be running speed density to make use of the flexfuel sensor, as the original ECU input for the MAF variable signal is used for the flexfuel input. Wiring it up was as easy as finding the unused MAF wire in the harness, and adding a +12V source and chassis ground for the sensor. The ECMLink software will automatically interpolate between two timing tables (min and max octane) as well as adjust the global injector scaling based on the ethanol content of the fuel. I have control over the low and high crossover points for the timing tables, as well as the compensation percentage between pumpgas and E100. There is no external boost control tied into the sensor readings, but that does not bother me as I'm running the same amount of pressure on pumpgas and ethanol. I can use a dual stage boost controller in the future if I need to.

Here are some screenshots showing the settings, timing tables, and a datalog. First one is the settings tab, where I can make the timing and fuel adjustments. The upper third of this tab contains all the fields for adjustment.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1401121634

This is a datalog showing the weight given the max octane map (100%), the raw signal from the sensor, the global compensation, and real-time analysis of the ethanol content. We are currently on the E70 winter blend in CO, and apparently it's not even that good, as shown in the log (FlexEthMix). Since I did all my ethanol tuning on this blend, I've got my crossover point for the max octane timing map set to 65% (in the pic above).

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1401121634

Here are the min (pump91) and max (e65+) octane maps I'm currently using. I've capped the total timing at the same place for both maps because VirtualDyno says I'm right around 250hp/tq (regardless of fuel). Once I get on the local DynoDynamics and get some numbers I may feel like I can add some timing to the maxoct map.

Min octane
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1401121634

Max octane
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1401121634

Anywhoo, I know MS can handle this as well but I don't think many of you guys have taken advantage of it. It's totally worth the effort if you have ethanol availability.

Fireindc 05-26-2014 01:52 PM

Wow man, speechless about your recent upgrades. Glad to see you hopped on the NB billie bandwagon, i'd like to know how they work out for you in the end. I feel like the "crispness" you lost is just a side effect of ride height, as I had the same situation when I raised my car over an inch.

The flex sensor setup is just awesome, and makes me want to look into that myself. Where did you pickup the flexfuel sensor? A quick google search shows they are expensive new, but probably could find a junkyard sensor for much cheaper, or ebay used.

matthewdesigns 05-27-2014 01:12 AM

Thanks man, feels good to make some solid progress with the car. I'm really liking where it is.

I grabbed the sensor and harness off an eBay vendor, brand new, for $80 shipped. The sensors can be found for as little as about $65+shipping elsewhere, but you'll have to wire directly to it or find a harness separately or at a junkyard.

The new shocks are great so far. The ride is still pretty firm, but the small bumps and irregularities in the roads here are not a sharp feeling, and the way the car feels more "together" across extended rough areas is greatly improved. Definitely worth the work to get them even dialed in to where they are now.

Now I need to do some maintenance (timing belt) and get that trans swapped in before I get stranded somewhere lol.

Went to the last Friday night drags for the season to give the Greddy kit one more hurrah before I swap it out. Better ET and trap than I was expecting, I was thinking high 13's at 102ish. Still can't 60 the thing for shit. E85, 16psi tapering to 13, conservative timing because stock bottom end.

I'm on the left, car on the right was a ~425whp BRZ. Elevation at the track is 4800', DA was around 5500'. Backed up the trap with another 110mph pass (13.8 ET on that one).

Fireindc 09-07-2014 01:57 PM

Dude, that's super impressive for a 1.6 greddy at high altitude. Probably close to a 12 at sea level..

Also.. you mentioned "before I swap out the kit". WHAT are you doing? 1.8 time?

18psi 09-07-2014 02:00 PM

It really is. Good job

matthewdesigns 09-08-2014 12:39 PM

Thanks guys. I frankly didn't think it was going to go better than low 14s and 100ish. Backed up the trap with another 110 pass (at 13.8). New bits going in are a GT2560R and FM mani/dp. Hoping to make the same power 1Krpm earlier. This was also with my timing flat at 15* after peak boost so I don't bend shit on the bottom end.

I did also start buying parts to do a 1.8 swap, including an FM 1.8 manifold and FM 1.8 swap kit. I have another Miata to flip (broken short nose) so I figure I'll kill two birds and just pick up a 1.8 for mine and dump my 1.6 into that car. But I got impatient and grabbed the 1.6 mani for the meantime lol.

Fireindc 09-08-2014 02:11 PM

Nice man, I'm sure you will make more bottom and topend power with the 2560. Should be pretty awesome for your 1.6 :)

Glad that my old setup treated you well during the time you had it. Now pop that bad boy up for sale and get your $$ back out of it :)

Get us some videos, virtual dynos, and moar pics asap!

Edit: also, what downpipe/exhaust are you currently running?

matthewdesigns 10-20-2014 01:44 AM

Thanks Nate! Will post more stuff once it is fully retuned and good to go. So far with only a few touchups to the fuel map VD says I'm up about 40hp and 40tq at the same pressure I had the GReddy running (17psi peak tapering to 14). However, peak boost is happening at the same RPM as the GReddy, so I think I need a bigger exhaust now lol. I'm still making more power earlier, but I feel like this setup ought to be spooling quicker, maybe it will once I dick around with timing on the low end.

Downpipe is the FM two piece, but only the upper half. The lower half was angled all weird to meet my existing exhaust so I welded up a short section to work with it. I got a decent price on all this stuff and it's known good, so I went for it. Would have loved to pick up the ARTech mani/separated dp the turbo seller had but it was too much coin.

Saul_Good 10-28-2014 09:01 PM

Nice! I can't wait to see this in action! Have you run it at the track (not 1/4mile) with the Greddy setup?

matthewdesigns 10-29-2014 05:35 PM

Nope, last time I was there on the road course was with my first setup (16g). I'm excited to get back out there!

Saul_Good 11-01-2014 03:03 PM

Good meeting up, hope you had a blast like I did at the roadcourse. How'd you do at afterwards at the drags?

I really need to rethink my car. I drove a bunch, and I like Andrew's FM miata as well as the S2K.

I am basically limiting myself because I like to autox in STR also. I also have this goal to keep up w/SpecMiata drivers (not beat them) in STR trim. They run PMP between 1:47- 1:52.

I dunno though, i'll continue to have fun until I figure it out. lol. See you out there again.

matthewdesigns 11-02-2014 03:27 PM

Good to meet you guys, too. Drags were a bust, too cold and no track prep...I spun all the way down the track. The only person who I knew that hooked at all was driving an AWD Talon on slicks, everyone else was skating around like me haha.

Lapping was a blast though! I got a new personal best on the road course at 1:51.75 with a bunch of 1:52-54 laps mixed in. And the new turbo setup ran flawlessly, really happy with how well it is working.

Trans finally started munching itself today. Something on the countershaft has been whining loudly for months, and during some highway tuning today 3rd finally got too pissed off for life and is done. Will post pics once it's apart (not for a rebuild but for giggles). I have a 5spd that is getting some mods, and a 6spd that is stock, so one of those will go in. Looks like the perfect time to get my 1.8 swap underway, might as well go balls deep if I'm fooling around in there.

Here's a sound clip I made after I got back to my neighborhood shifting through 1st and 2nd, then comes 3rd lol. I shift up past it into 4th then back down. Due to the tapping sound I thought it was the bottom end of the motor at first, thankfully it is not because this motor is going in another car after it comes out.

Debating having the rotating assembly balanced, but the motor is not going to live at high RPMs so that my not matter as much; at the very least I'm going to weight match the piston/pin/rod combos. I credit the motor life to decent tuning and a forgiving fuel :) The 1.6 is getting a headgasket and going in a '90 that I bought to flip, so we'll see how good and forgiving it actually was when the head comes off.

Eleven months later...

I'm finally back on the road with a 1.8 and 6spd swap. Last January I broke a tooth off of 3rd in my 5spd, and decided to build a 1.8 and install my 6spd when the engine was done. Well, I didn't think it would take this long, but I did resurrect a '90 with a broken crank in the meantime by swapping in the de-boosted 1.6 from this car so I got my Miata fix that way.

Anywhoo, here are some pics and all that went into it. I did everything except the balance job, sent that off to the machine shop we use at work. Worked in a reroute with a Skou spacer as well, but changed it up a little by using an inline t-stat housing under the TB, under which I gained space via an FIAV delete. Adapted my DSM TPS to the 1.8 TB by cutting new keyways in the shaft and trigger plate (was 90* out otherwise). Gasket matched the head on both sides, and the IM. Lapped the valves. Picked up some 15x8 Kosei K4R wheels and in the downtime I borrowed a roller and flattened the inner fender lips, and installed a Wilwood prop valve while the bay was empty. Also put some heat shielding in the trans tunnel.

'96 1.8 donor, 97K miles in good condition
Eagle rods with ARP 2000 hardware
ACL Race rod and main bearings
ACL thrust bearings
Rotating assembly balanced; crank polished
Head ports gasket matched, mild port in runners
Valves lapped
Head and block decked
Cometic MLS head gasket
ARP head studs
New rings
Intake manifold gasket matched
Coolant reroute with Skou billet spacer, Kia waterneck, and inline t-stat housing; long section of typical GM reroute hose runs up to the TB area, then the inline housing sits under the TB, finished off with a Dayco 71950 from the housing to radiator inlet (goes around the driver side of the TB inlet)
Front water neck deleted; freeze plug and blockoff plate fabbed/installed
Fan control moved to FPS output at ECU
EGR delete; blockoff plates fabbed/installed
TPS from 1g DSM adapted to the BP throttle body
FIAV deleted
Turbo oil feed from sandwich plate, OEM oil cooler retained; coolant outlet on oil cooler feeds turbo
New crank seals front and rear
New water pump/timing belt/pulleys
New valve stem seals
New cam seals
New intake and exhaust manifold gaskets
New valve cover gasket
New knock sensor
New O2 sensor
-10 AN bung welded to pan; 5/8” drain from turbo
Comp ceramic 6-puck sprung clutch disc (“Stage 4”) with FM Level 1 pressure plate
New pilot bearing
6spd from '01 Miata, new output seal installed
Motorcraft synthetic fluid
Braided long line to replace the rubber and curly clutch lines
FM throttle cable and coilpack relocation parts
Cleaned up/repaired a lot of brittle wiring
Heat shielding added to trans tunnel
Wilwood prop valve just for kicks

Retained from previous build: 1.6 CAS; 1g DSM coils, TPS, engine harness, ECU; all fuel related items; FM Level 1 pressure plate, lightened stock flywheel, 2.5” exhaust

Still needs a touch-up on the clutch adjustment and break-in miles on the disc itself before I bump the boost up. Shooting for 300wtq/350whp. Rough tune at 12psi is netting about 210wtq/230whp per VD, so I'm thinking 22-24psi ought to do it.

Knock sensor hidden up top, OEM oil pressure sender on a 20mm steel extension (to clear the knock sensor), aux oil pressure sender (since eliminated), oil temp sender, OEM oil cooler, sandwich plate, turbo oil and water feeds. My biggest fear is that there would be leaks under here. There were two!

Coolant reroute using Skou spacer/Kia neck, typical GM long hose, but with an inline t-stat housing and a short S-shaped hose from a GM V6. Dayco 71950 is the part number.

FIAV delete makes room for the inline housing.

Fender rolling while the weather cooperated.

Looks good, but why no epoxy on the throttle body shaft?
I would cry if my built engine got wrecked from an ingested TB screw.

matthewdesigns 02-15-2016 10:00 AM

I have not read about screws backing out of OEM throttle body shafts, is this something I don't know about? I know Skunk2 TBs have a nasty habit of shedding them.

Ian's 99 post-TB screw re-rebuild.

Epoxy is good, I've also seen somewhere where they tac welded the screws.

They back out from the vibrations of the motor & high rpm.

matthewdesigns 02-15-2016 11:24 AM

Ouch. Epoxy it is!

waitwut?
isn't that the whole reason everyone here switches to junk2?
supposedly junk2 never loses screws so many here upgrade to them vs stock

aidandj 02-16-2016 01:20 AM

The throttle body shaft breaks too. Which is why epoxy isn't a full solution.

You are talking about the stock throttle body correct?
I'm with Vlad in thinking that the Skunk2 was the appropriate fix.

aidandj 02-16-2016 09:58 AM

Yes

May I ask why you went with the inline thermostat if you are using the Skou spacer and Kia neck? Maybe I've missed something but I thought it was a good thing to run the thermostat on the back of the block. Will have to read some more.....

acedeuce802 02-16-2016 10:45 AM

Having the thermostat on the back of the block is the best for response. Using an in-line thermostat makes it more accessible and convenient. If you're okay with a harder to reach thermostat housing, back of the head is ideal.

What acedeuce802 said...convenience. No freaking way I want to get back behind the head to do anything with the t-stat if required.

My only direct experience is with 4g63 engines and Skunk2 throttle bodies, and we stopped installing them for customers years ago (when we primarily worked on 4g's) due to screws coming out. We've avoided anything made by them since.

A short update after running the car all year on the new setup. Winter maintenance to include a trans rebuild (6spd), new turbo-downpipe hardware, and cam seals. Some mild aero stuff, too, so I can work the competition a little better in my regional time attack/fast autox series. Placed 3rd in class this year behind an NC and a Z06; here's a video from one event this past season. Run on a defunct NASCAR oval + infield road course. Different course each time, sometimes infield, sometimes oval, once in a while both. Pretty fun, huge turnout most events (150+ drivers), and most importantly, cheap fun.

I can't remember how to embed the youtube player...

We bought a dyno for the shop, had an employee dyno day last Friday. I put down 303whp/292wtq SAE corrected on the Dynojet. 6000' elevation, 1.8L, GT2560R, e85.

Nice, you got that thing at full tilt. Why so rich afr tho?

matthewdesigns 12-29-2016 02:58 PM

I think the wideband sensor is no good on the dyno. Everyone else had super rich readings, too. My log shows mid 11s. Which is still pretty fat for ethanol, but for some reason my car does not like to get into the 12:1 range.

And yeah to full tilt. Anything more and it starts to sound like it is coming apart.

Fireindc 04-25-2023 08:53 PM

Hey Matthew, long time no talk. You still have this car?

Yeah boi
But I'm never here as you can plainly see. Light maintenance stuff today and a quick run up the parkway for kicks. Thought I'd dip in to see who's still breathing.

Glad you are still kickin'! You still in NC? Ever go to MATG?

Yes and yes 😁
Approaching five years here with the intention of only staying one. You need to roll out here for that event, or just any time, and run all these roads. So much goodness in a 100mi radius it's hard to choose sometimes.

Man, has it been 5 years already? Damn.

It's in the plans to make the trip to MATG, I'll definitely be in touch. DM sent!
