My WWYD thread.
So I've committed myself to buying Full Tilt Boogie's 99. (See f/s thread) Now I'm stuck with making a decision with what to do with my NA. I really don't need to have both cars. Id love to make it a dedicated track car but there's no justification for that as Id rarely get it to the track. So more than likely I will get rid of it. The question is should I part it, and keep that parts that I could use on the NB or should I try and sell the car as a whole, What could I get for the car as a whole? Or should I keep it and let it sit? I could always leave the NB as is and have the NA as the fun car, but I don't think I could go long driving the NB without boost. And If I boost the NB, then why bother keeping the NA?
So.... Part the NA? If I part the NA should I sell motor or keep rods and arp hardware and sell just the pistons? What's a built 1.6 worth? Sell the NA? Keep both as is? Have two boosted Miata's? (NA WOULD SIT A LOT) Someone figure this out for me lol. __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
You know...a dedicated track car would make you get to the track more often. Just saying.
On a side note, a nice slow, COMFORTABLE DD + a boosted monster would be nice....or a low boost NB that is reliable and comfortable. Something with AC for the street. |
Track the NA, if it gets hurt you wont feel as bad. Keep the '99 for a round the town cruiser. One for track days, one for cruise nights.
If it's within your means and have the space, of course. |

+1 keep the NB as a cruiser/DD. Keep the NA. You can drive the crap out of the NB and never worry about it.
They are so slooooooooooooooooooooooow without boost though. Last time I had my wastegate wired open I could not believe how slow it was. |
If you can part out the NA and return it to stock, I think you'd get more money out of it overall, rather than just selling it as-is.
Not having boost for a little while would motivate you that much more to work on the NB! |

If I keep the NB stock, I'm going to hate driving it. Especially the first time some douche in his C6 blows by me while getting on 95. Then I'll drive my NA and be fast but uncomfortable cause I'm sweating my balls off. he car probably wont sell for much as is especially without a/c, and there's quite a few NA's for sale in the same price range Id put mine in, Id like $6k for it.
I'm so confused. __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |

Set the NB up for DD/track use and have the boosted NA for when you want to piss Corvette owners off. N/A and turbo cars are both equally fun on track, but for very different reasons.
|
Part out the NA as much as you feel like to get the most money out of it.
Turbo the NB. Get a cheap NA track car. Like a 1000$ Miata + cage. Drive it until you find a series to compete in and then build it to those specs. Try to win. What i would do. |
Phil, this is similar to what I went through and now I have an n/a NB. My vote is to keep your NA for the boosted fun and have the NB for a solid, comfortable daily. I miss the hell out of my NA all the time.
There's nothing wrong with doing a few things to the NB though, a header (if it doesn't already have one) really helps the 99-00 models. I have a RoadsterSport midpipe and Cobalt exhaust and a DIY 90* intake, that's all. Car came with Bilstein coilovers, FM sways, adjustable endlinks, and I'm adding a better rollbar and frame rail reinforcements. I've already driven it to TGPR, drove the piss out of it on the track, and then drove home. It performed very well there. It does suck when a faster car blows you away and you know if you had had boost it would have been a better match, but there's also those times where you're in the right car at the right time. :) |
It all depends, is beating the ever present Corvette owning hoser the most important to you, or is rolling around in a comfy and reliable daily important?
I'd probably lightly mod the NB so that it was fun but not unreliable and then you can still drive the NA when it's not hot/comfortable and enjoy the crazy power but the NB will always be around. In all honesty, most people have a blast in a stock NB. Trouble is, here on this board, we aren't most people when it comes to cars. I will say this though, I miss the last car that I fully built about once every two weeks. My NB is mostly stock while I'm collecting stuff to build it, and every now and then the occasional freeway on ramp doesn't make me smile like it used to, but getting 31 mpg in air conditioned comfort does just about every day. |
keep the na. make it stupid fast.
boost the nb with something mild running low boost, so its not a complete turd. like around 180whp or so. win win. |
If there's V8 money for the NB...
|
Strip the NA and make it a bulletproof, easy to maintain track car. Rotrex for the NB.
|
Sell the NA, ls1 swap the NB.
|
Give me your NA. Enjoy your NB

I'm so confused. I wish I was going to get to meet you at the lake tomorrow. I would have made the trek if I didn't have plans to be in Atlanta on Monday. I'll have to make it to the next southeast get together. I must say, when the time comes to upgrade the miata, it's going to be with one of the M3 hardtop convertibles. I'll keep the miata as a track car. It would be nice to have a convertible that the family can fit in. |
