NASA time trial driver passes after wreck on Summit Point Main

S2000 Forums -> Cale Injurred at NASA Summit Main
apparently a rotor failed and he put it into a wall from 125+mph. This guy's death serves as a reality check for me to be more responsible in my street car on the track without a cage, and throw old pads in the trash, rather than run "one-more" session on them.

:sadwavey:

that's my track....sad. I had glazed my pads at the end of that straight, around 120+ mph, it's not a fun feeling....there's a run off that leads into a small circle track after the straight, sounds like he couldn't make the opening....

That sucks. RIP. HANS device may be on my XMAS list for track days.

I know, I am trying to figure out how to finance an R3 before thursday...

looks like a cage, or HANS device would have been of little use with the impact he sustained. It should still be a wake up call, if we can afford to modify our cars to go fast, then we have no excuse to not keep it in tip top shape, and utilize all safety equipment available.

I want to put a cage in my green car, but I still drive it on the street. I should have gone with a 1.6 kit, and made the ugly car into a racecar so i could put all the safety equipment in it.

Scott it totally sucks to hear about someone wrecking it at summit. =\

As I understand it's the 2nd fatality at that track. Happened this past sunday.

I bought a strap based safety device this summer to use for track days. Never did use it. I'll be rethinking that next season.

Are you joking? If you've forgotten about Kubica's crash in 2007, take a look again - Kubica's head violently shaking side to side. With the 75G recorded by the telemetry if it wasn't for the Hans device Kubica would've been gone already ...

If the guy with the Honda had a Hans on his helmet and a seat with head supports / halo I bet the outcome would've been much different

Here are the crash videos from Hans about how the device works in frontal and side impacts.

fuck, I'm about to drop $600 on a hans. 6UL's sure would be a lot more fun than a HANS.

edit: Why are the all so fucking expensive?

cueball1 11-18-2008 12:13 PM

For affordable protection check out this site. These guys do 2 versions of helmet restraints. The Lapointe device is a similar design to the Hutchens. (they claim Hutchen's knocked their's off) For $125 it's a good buy for added safety when your head and neck isn't worth the cost of a Hans! Also it's light and comfortable. The company that makes these caters primarily to boat racers but they cross over into auto racing too. The $75 version that just wraps around your chest is what most of the boaters use. The more complete Lapointe system at $125 is what is recommended for auto racing. Lot's of dirt track, circle track and midget racers use these and they wreck pretty regularly.
