I'll add another car to that and remove the GC8 w/STi swap (can't make my partents sign the loan for me on that car...). I'm adding a Saab 9-2x Wagon w/ 2.5 subie engine, AWD. What would you say about it? it's a 2005 w/ 22k miles for 15k out the door w/ the tax and registration paid and a moonroof installed. I really liked the car. I have a friend that is removing his stock turbo off of his STi and the manifold, Nvidia exhaust. I know that would fit without a problem in this thing and I would be pushing 250awhp in a wagon... I like this car ALOT!

The interior is a WRX interior which I like and it's not a subaru (my parents said that no matter what they will not sign a loan for a subaru... well this is a SAAB).

i think y'all need to leave Dhaark alone. maybe his parents are rocking 500K a year and they can afford to buy him something as a HS grad gift.. AND pay his tuition in full, cash.

good to be rich.

in that case, if you're going to Ann Arbor, i'd stick w/ the Saab 9-2 turbo. if you're going to MSU, i don't really give a fuk what you drive.

I don't make that kind of money but as far as I know My scholarships are paying most of my tuition and I'm not going to either of those for the first 2 years. I'll be going to Oakland University (not OCC= Oakland Comm College). I'll be going to UofM Ann Arbor for the 3rd and 4th year. So the saab 9-2x will be a sweet car to have ;)
DECIDED, I might be picking it up tomorrow. we'll see. My insurance is SUPER LOW, 170/ month for a 99 miata and a '05 9-2x with 0/200 deductibles on full coverage on both as a regular commuter car. My parents are not on my policies, all by my self w/ clean record. I'm 19 btw.

DO NOT!!!... let me repeat...DO NOT!!! buy a new bodied Saab 9-3! I've had Saabs for a while now. Had a 9-3 Viggen and currently have a 9-5 Aero. Saabs, after GM got thoroughly involved, suck for reliability. Old style 9-3's are really solid. The new ones may look and perform better but reliability is awful. Check consumer reports. The 9-5 from 99 to 2003 was their most reliable european made car rated. After 2003 ratings dropped a bunch. I think the Swedish content is down to 12% if I remember right.

Your parents too snobby for Subie's or did they have a bad experience once? I agree with other people here. You don't need such a high dollar vehicle for college. Save your monthly payment for important stuff like chicks and beer.

cueball1 07-30-2007 06:21 PM

Dhaark. You've paid up. Set up an AV already!

Dhaark 07-30-2007 06:26 PM

SO the '05 9-2x is a bad idea? w/subaru drivetrain?

Ben 07-30-2007 06:49 PM

IMO, any $15k car is a bad idea, especially something like a saab.

I was just reading that in the past 5 years, college tuition is up 35% after factoring in the adjustment for inflation. If I were entering college now, I'd be scarred. Scholarships are great when you have them. What happens if it goes away?

Don't trap yourself into having to work to pay for a car when you should be taking care of school stuff. You're in for a shock going to college from HS. HS was easy, you could fuck off all you wanted, teachers were forgiving. College is much different. You will feel much more like being just a number. Your professors won't give a shit about your personal problems. And your grades will come solely based of tests. Sometimes just 1 or 2 tests over an entire semester.

You've already got a pretty nice car. Get yourself a beater. The only reason to get a fancy car is to impress people. I assure you, the flashy car will not make you real friends or get you girls.

Dhaark 07-30-2007 07:04 PM

I fully understand what you are saying Ben but my point is that the car is basically paid off at the point I buy it.... My parents are just trying to keep me home... and make me drive to school every day (around 25 miles both ways). That is why they want to get me a "better" car that the miata can remain a "toy" and that I won't have to put too many miles on the miata.
The reason to get the saab is that it's AWD and has a subaru engine in it.
I talked to the salesperson (tell my parents to by a car not from a dealership) and the price is 13.5k out the door if I pick it up tomorrow (clean title, no problems, extremely well taken care of, previous owner traded it in for a AM db-7).
The dorm at my Univ costs 7600 a year (2 semesters) so I figured out that I'll get the car and live at home.
I am wondering if it's faster than a '07 Mazda 3 w/ 2.3l engine, completely stock.

What do you guys think?

btw. philip if you read this.... get us a subforum for SMembers... ;)

Ben 07-30-2007 07:06 PM

I understand your situation.

However, you are cheating yourself of the college experience. Dorms are expensive, but worth it. You are much more likely to succeed if you live on campus.

You're 19. You don't need 2 expensive cars. You need to go to college.

B

Oh, and the car will still be 13.5 if you show up tomorrow, or Sunday, or whenever else if they still have it on the lot.

akaryrye 07-30-2007 07:53 PM

cueball, the saab 92x is a "great" car, because it is a subaru. I owned and drove one for 14k miles and then sold it for 20k which was a lucky sell. Plus know probably 20 people from the area who driver wrx's and they "never" have reliability issues. It is a really solid car, Other saabs ... fuck em they suck.

Dhaark 07-30-2007 08:17 PM

These 2 cars the 9-2x and the Miata are not expensive...somewhat but not really. the miata is like 5k and the saab is 13k, I chose to live at home for the first 2 years just because I need a DD and I really don't want to spend 15 thousand for 2 years of living on campus. I rather have a car that i can reliably drive all year long and than after I transfer to a diff university i'll live on campus.

And YES, I know I'll miss out on the college experience. It's 2 out of 4 years, so I'll live half at home and half on campus.

The car will not be 13.5 later. My brother, his g/f bought a car from the same dealership, they didn't pick up the car on the day they were supposed to and the price went up. I'll still think about it but the price is lower just because it's the last day of the month. They had the same situation and they regret their decisions of not buying the car on that day. You would have to be lucky or the car would have to be shitty that it would last another month on the lot so that you could buy it again at the end of the month.

cueball1 07-30-2007 08:40 PM

The Saabaru is OK. No problems with the 9-2. GM has pretty much nothing to do with building it. In your 1st post you mentioned the 9-3 as a possibility also. The 9-2 is great, it's just a worked over more luxurious WRX. If you want a swedish built Saab like the 9-3 (not a rebadged Subaru) , buy a model before 2004.

Dhaark 07-30-2007 09:12 PM

2005 Saab 9-2x Wagon, picking up most likely tomorrow. IDK but somehow I want this car... probably because I don't have anything else to drive now and this is a saab on subaru parts and I love subaru's. ;)

hustler 07-30-2007 11:29 PM

the lexus is reliable and big. The rest are not reliable. The mazda 3 is kinda meh.

Dhaark 07-30-2007 11:32 PM

Hustler, why do you think that the 9-2x is not a reliable and big car? mazda 3 is a POS, slow, small, overpriced and too many of those drive around here...

drewbroo 07-30-2007 11:39 PM

Forester 2.5 XT Plenty of room

Al Hounos 07-30-2007 11:42 PM

you'd rather have a saab and live at home than drive a beater and live on campus? bad choice.... college life is a lot more fun than any car, any non-ferrari anyway.
