New guy saying Hi

Hey guys, newbie DIY turbo owner from Toronto here.

Great site, just signed up. Been lurking for quite a while, finally decided to create an account...

I put my first turbo miata on the road three summers ago. It was a red 90 and I had an ETD Racing shorty manifold built up with a WRX 3 bolt flange. Used the WRX TD-04 turbo with a Bipes computer and a BEGI AFPR. Ran it at 4 psi initially and then added a Probe intercooler. That was a great car, even ran it on snow tires up here for one winter. But the mileage was getting kind of high (about 350,000kms) and rust was starting to take over...

So, I got a black 97 and moved most of the turbo parts over.... changed the manifold to a 1.8 flange and got rid of the Bipes and AFPR. Added an Emanage Blue, 370cc injectors and a wideband. Never got all the tuning bugs worked out so am still running at low boost, but the power is great. Not driving this car in the winter, so looking forward to getting it out in the spring and finishing everything off. My 90 lives on as my winter beater...

I try to get the car out a few times a summer for local lapping days and also Auto-x it on a regular basis. Lots of fun.

When I'm not wrenching on the car, I fly airplanes for a living. Notice in the treadmill thread that there a few pilots on here. Am currently flying a Navajo in Northern Ontario doing charter work onto the gravel runways north of here. Lots of fun!! Are there any other Canadian or Ontario pilots on here??

For anyone thinking of using the WRX TD-04, it is a great little turbo. I'd be happy to answer any questions about my setup.

cheers

Welcome, correct me if I'm wrong anyone but the Greddy turbo is the same size, yes?

Welcome, thanks for the intro... not too many people running the WRX turbo I think... glad to have you. Keep up with your research in the Emanage forum for help working your bugs out.

It is kind of fun. We mostly run into small gravel strips, so the landings are always interesting....

Nothing like flying a dirty old 'ho

Not the same turbo. It is a different verient of the TD-04 line. I don't remember the exact differences off the top of my head. When I was picking my turbo, I felt that it was a better choice than the Greddy. Plus I managed to build my kit for about the same money as a Greddy but ended up with all the common upgrades already done. Plus it was more fun :dancegay:

We run a King Air 100 too. It is kind of a PITA on the gravel though....

WRXs have TD04 13G
GReddy kit is TD04 15G

Bah, they're designed for it.

Imagine a pilatus or something with the engine up front and that huge prop.

True, the props take a beating on startup though...

Lots of PC12s, around here. They seem to work quite well.

What part of the continent do you fly in??

Here are a couple under the hood....

This is the current car. Cold air box is off. You can also see the coolant reroute. This engine is actually from an Escort GT. The pic was taken between when I exploded the stock crossover pipe and when the Probe I/C went in...

Here is my cold air box and master cylinder heat shield. Works great!! I cut the cowl for airflow and there is a cone filter inside the box. This pic is on my original 90 Miata. I have since moved it over to my 97.

There is a big hole cut in the firewall between the fender and the master cylinder. Cool air comes in from the base of the windshield, like with the Randal cold air intake. Works great, except in winter when it is really cold. Then the clutch fluid gets too cold and the clutch gets pretty stiff.
