New Hobby

http://mason.gmu.edu/~lsnead/glock17.jpg

So I picked up my first gun today. I got a Glock 17. Hopefully sometime in the next week I can get to the range to try it out. Next on the list I think will be a ar-15 lower receiver. Hopefully shooting ends up being cheaper then my miata. I cannot afford to expensive hobbies.

bryantaylor 11-08-2008 10:42 PM

welcome to the adiction. and it will not be cheaper than the miata. you are now doomed to always be broke. you will now be trying to decide if you want a new gun, or a new mod on the miata.

Braineack 11-08-2008 11:06 PM

let me know when you go to the range.

neogenesis2004 11-08-2008 11:25 PM

I have never been to a range but have always wanted to go. Scott, you better call if you ever plan going to a gun range!

Given the current forecast on the political climate, many feel now is a good time to make your purchase; demand is certainly increasing, proportional to supply. There's a few GB's on various lowers, e.g. DoubleStar stripped lowers at $85/ea. Nice way to hedge your bets at a low buy-in.

Doomed

I agree with Bryan!! Thats a nice gun though. That was one of the guns I shot when I was shoping for my first piece. I ended up with a PPK because it fit under my motorcycle seat. I probally would have bought the Glock if I had room for it. +1 on your purchase!!

I go to Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly VA. Next time I am planning on going I will let you two know. Also there is the national Gun show at the Dulles Expo Center Novemeber 21-23rd.

Can you give me a link to those GB's? While I dont plan on building a AR-15 soon, I do want to pick up a lower soon. Local gun shop has them in stock for $135 each.

The Glock was not my first choice on guns. I rather have a ppk or something a little smaller for myself to carry. Unforgently the glock is all the shop had in stock. It came down to that the Glock was a good in home defense gun and a decent target shooter. Once I get better at shooting and get my CCW I will be shopping for something smaller.

You have to just make yourself stop. I bought like 4 guns in two months. I had to stop looking at them. I'm more of a riffle and shotgun guy though. I do want a 44 mag or a 50 cal. pistol for hog hunting though.

See, here it goes again. LOL

Arkmage 11-09-2008 10:34 AM

my next will be a S&W .357Mag.

That's also how I ended up with my Taurus MP .45. Very nice and very small 10+1.
And yeah, having your carry permit makes things so easy.

I'm trying to figure out what I want next right now actually.

The National NRA range in Fairfax is better.

National NRA range does not rent guns. So up untill last night it was not better. I will be checking it out soon to see how i like it, and how pricing compares to Blue Ridge.

ScottFW 11-09-2008 08:40 PM

NRA range increased their prices sometime in the last year. It's $14/hr for NRA members and $18/hr for non-members. Kinda pricey, considering when I was in WA state the ranges I went to were $10 or $12 for as long as you wanted to shoot. But it's a pretty nice facility, and longer than most indoor ranges at 50 yds. Although the rate is supposed to be for an hour, I usually stay about 90 minutes, and nobody has been watching the clock shooing people out.

Milton Tucker 11-10-2008 07:11 AM

sure sucks that you city people have to pay to shoot.:giggle:

shuiend 11-10-2008 07:24 AM

ScottFW did you steal my car? Yours in your sig sounds just like mine about a year ago.

Also does the NRA Range sell targets there or do I have to bring them myself? I looked up the prices and they are the same as Blue Ridge Arsenal when you have two people. I will probally check out the NRA range sometime soon to see which one I like more.

Maybe I should start a thread in the regional section to get a group of us to go shooting.

New or used? Accessories? Do you mind if I ask you the price you paid? Asking b/c the wife wants a gun so better get it now before she changes her mind.

Side note, been thinking about spring dyno day and options for after and there's the good old standby of the kart track, local drag strip (you KNOW someone will break something), or the local gun range......hmmm.....

Braineack 11-10-2008 08:45 AM

how about drag racing our miata in the big 'ol empty parking lot of the go-kart track while throwing cans out the window and having the passengers shoot them?

My .454 Casull is full of win. I can shoot .45 colt for plinking, and .454 for hunting. The ability to shoot either makes it better than a Ruger .480 or even the old .44 mag. I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 2x leupold handgun scope. BTW, do not put a red dot on a .454 or .50. The recoil will kill the red dot within 50 shots.

I bought the glock new. It was $599 with the night sites. I know I could of gotten a better price, but I picked it up from a small local shop I like to support. I was planning on waiting tell the gun show to get one, but impulse purchases make me feel better.

As for shooting after a dyno day that sounds great. I would just have to look up the laws on travling with my gun first.

We should get some 22 caliber psitols to shoot cans with. Anything bigger might leave noticeable holes in the walls at the kart track.
