New Mazda RX?
In case you haven't seen it:
Mazda RX-VISION Concept First Look - Motor Trend Mixed feelings about this. I love RXs and MXs, but I don't think trying to support both cars has worked that well for Mazda. |
Weren't the NC and the RX like the same platform, but with a different engine and shorter?
Kudos to them for keeping the rotary alive. Most other car makers would have ditched it by now, and its nice to see technology still alive. |
I'm extremely curious to see how mazda engineers this. I'm hoping it's some sort of new fancy styled rotary motor and not just a rehashed renesis platform.
Whatever they end up bringing to production I'm sure will look better then the concept. While I like the concept, I don't like how manufacturers jump to unrealistic styled headlights etc when we know they can't be street legal here int he US. |
If they can stick to the promise of making the rotary reliable, more efficient, and meet emissions at the same time I will be all for it. I always hear great things about how the engine performs when it's working as intended. Would love to see it continued.

How many rotors can you fit under that bonnet, 6, 8? :D
No sporty dynamics with that long wheelbase (if it follows old school physics). |

PS: I've yet to hear a legitimate argument for them too. something more than "it's different, teehee, you wouldn't understand" Despite all this though, I'm actually excited about the rx7. I've always loved how they look and dream of a LS swapped FD some day |
Mazda just needs to stretch out the ND platform, put a permanent roof on it and a hatch like the RX7. All that and the rotary would be an awesome car. The proportions of that thing are way off and don't look production viable in the least.
|
Sexy as hell , but I'll never be able to afford one.
|
I will never in my life understand the allure of a rotary engine, and I've had the pleasure of seat time in an FD. They do literally nothing better than a piston engine, and they do a multitude of things worse.
Rx8s are insanely cheap, to the point where I am tempted to buy one with a blown-up Renesis, stick an NC front subframe and a 2.5L MZR in it, and add a turbo. |

Aside from the reliability issues, the rx8 was way too heavy for the available torque. That was a big reason the fuel economy was so bad. The engine had to be worked hard to get anywhere. |
I have wanted for so long to like rotaries because of the small size and light weight, but the simple fact is that they are awful, doubly so when you have to make them smog compliant.
The real proof is to think to yourself how much better the rx8 would have been if they had put something even as boring as a 200hp ecotec in it. More power, more torque, more reliability, more fuel efficiency, etc. With something like one of those 300whp v6 engines out of the camaro, it would have been an awesome car. It had great handling and below average weight. I loved everything about it except the anemic power. It felt exactly like a miata with rear seats. |

That being said, it's just a concept. If they make a production version this will just be what loosely guides their design process. |

I heard (and seen) that a PHENOMENALLY working wanker I mean wankel is one that actually starts and drives. Guzzling gas more than a v8, guzzling oil, having no torque, having terrible emissions, and just a general gigantic piece of crap are usually noted as SOP

And it would be awesome if Mazda builds a better rotary for it. Sounds like they're at least trying, so the idea of a new RX7 isn't dead. |

I don't know why people knock the torque aspect of them so hard. Honda b series engines make less torque and more WHP most of the time vs. a Renesis when both modded.
Also, the "torque" issue, is not a thing on turbocharged rotaries. And one last thing, the Renesis sucks thanks to the EPA. That's why I'm going back to 13b-REW master race... https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446072243 |

lol random dyno plot of a high hp boosted wanker isn't really gonna make your case
honda's have those things called reliability and efficiency |

Was comparing naturally aspirated b series to naturally aspirated Renesis but okay.
Stock twins then? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446072849 |
