New Porsche 928
 

Kenzo's what to buy thread forced me to look up what a 996 or 997 looked like, and I stumbled across this.

Please tell me that your knew what a 996 or 997 is, and that you just wanted the know the differences. The 993's to me are still the best. Last of the air-cooled Porsche 911's.

To me I think Porsche is missing the mark, again. Instead of building another vehicle that is 100k, they should build an entry level sports car akin to the 944. They would capture buyers that are looking to upgrade their current sports cars to a higher mark. Porsche would get them in the family.Then as the person's financial situation increases Porsche could graduate them into the next line up and continue them in the family. I think there is an opportunity to gain more new customers on that spectrum than the 100k+ spectrum. However, the other side of the coin is that Porsche is an elite brand, and they don't really want to be known for cheaper vehicles. Porsche wont admit it, but the 924, even though it was a VW, and the 944(Audi, VW and Porsche) saved their asses from disappearing into history.

I doubt Porsche is worried about sales...unlike Mercedes...which every Honda toting Soccer mom now has...they want a stout following of true purists. When I'm on the MB forum now a days...I get 15 post a day about cheap fixs and "how do you install head rest tv's" Dont get me wrong...I like a cheap fix...but you buy the most exspensive car you can AFFORD...just my $.02

I think the new 928 is to mostly compete with the Ferrari 599.

And I knew 996's and 997's existed, and that they were just another 911

No disagreement there about sales and perception. They are one of the most profitable independent car companies. But, the true purist will tell you that Porsche lost their way when Porsche introduced the 996. Then the Cayenne made dead purist roll over in the grave. The Panamera, another no-no to purist, will compete with the Mercedes CLS, Jag XF and so on, and the 928 will be a grand tourer like the 599GTB, AM Vantage, cough cough the GT-R.(that hurt to say).

I had a 928S which I bought in 1981 (picked it up in Germany ;) ) and was really dissapointed with that car's performance. If I could do it all over again, I would've bought either the 944S or a 911 Turbo. Bear in mind that the difference between a 928S and a 944 Turbo at that time was around $12,000.

I hated the fact that I discovered that LSD was an option on that car after I had taken delivery! I haven't gotten over that yet. :mad:

IHMO, a late model 928 GTS or S4 is pure sex. They weren't the fastest and the reliability was worse than terrible... but the sexxxx just drips from that car. Stock 5-spokes and the spoiler option are the sweetness.

And a 928 without pop-up headlights isn't a 928 at all.

The 928, the replacement for the then aging 911. Wasn't going to happen since it was a front engine wasserpumpe V8. Back to the whole purist deal. 200-300hp was a lot of ponies in the late 70's to mid 80's.

The 944's 2.5L motor is exactly 1/2 the 928's V8 with balance shafts added. The 1989 944 Turbo S was pitted against the venerable 930 You can only imagine the wailing and nashing of teeth from that comparison when the 951 basically owned the 930 in every way. Go and find a rare 968CS, it has the 3.0 from the S2. Good motor, good power.
