got a new hosting client and decided to redo some of my crap. here is my new nas node config:

intel xeon x3430
4gb ddr3 1333 ecc-registered
80gb sata2 os drive
3x 1tb sata2 storage drives in raid 5
gluster storage platform

and here is config for client boxes:
intel xeon x3440
4gb or 8gb ddr3 1333 ecc-registered
2x 80gb sata2 os drives in raid 1
ubuntu or debian, depending on application

and finally db boxes:
2x intel xeon e5520
12gb - 24gb ddr3 1333 ecc-registered
2x 80gb sata2 os drives in raid 1
4x 1tb sata2 data drives in raid 10
freebsd (because it rules for mysql!)

each client gets 2 boxes at minimum with ability to scale up as they grow. pretty neat stuff and fairly low-cost.

I just upgraded to 12gb of ram, because running an entire game from a ramdisk is cool.
