Newb Porsche Owner Fail!

So I wake up this morning and my wife was leaving for work. I walk out front to grab a smoke and see something that made me feel like I got kicked in the balls. I jump on my mountain bike to ride over there and my wife freaks out
Wife: you cant leave the kids here alone
Me: It will be 2 min
Wife: Why do you care? Its not your car and you don't know them.
Me: I'm a car guy, its my duty...

So I ride over there and say whats up. The guy said he just bought it and was trailering it home.

Me: Don't mean to be nosey but you might not want to tie it down to the body.
Him: Why what will happen?
Me: Your going to sand paper the paint off and if its tight enough to even do anything your going to crush the fenders.
Him: I thank you for the advice but Id rather ruin the body then bend a wheel or axel.
Me: lol ok then later guys

So I guess I had him worried because he called his buddy to come over and take a look. His friend gets out and says looks good to me...lol When I was talking to him his Dad even told him, Oh yeah I see this guy towing his race cars all the time. I can't believe he thinks this is ok...

gospeed81 02-06-2010 11:03 AM

These kinda tools deserve to be passed by hustler while simultaneously having their girlfriends deflowered by him.

Rennkafer 02-06-2010 11:19 AM

I might have pointed out the fucking tow/tie down hooks under the bumpers... what a moron. Guy like that deserves to drive a Kia... forever.

jacob300zx 02-06-2010 11:23 AM

He just drove off for Houston, I could literaly see his paint chipping off as he honk at his Dad and left...

Braineack 02-06-2010 11:39 AM

What an idiot and it looks like his tow vehicle could use beefier suspension.

Calm down guys. He's adding speed waves to his body

cueball1 02-06-2010 12:48 PM

Holy crap. I wouldn't consider doing that to my $3K 15 year old Miata let alone a nice car. Unbelievable. Hope the doucher really cranked down on those ratcheting straps for good measure.

Not completely clear, did the guy buy it from a neighbor or did a neighbor buy it?

If I was selling that car and the guy started throwing straps over it like that I might just recind the deal and tear up his check. (unless it was a piece of crap I just screwed him over on)

Doppelgänger 02-06-2010 01:59 PM

someone needs to report this to jaloponik

NA6C-Guy 02-06-2010 02:07 PM

Jesus Christ, you aren't strapping down a piece of equipment with chains and binders, it's a Porsche with thin sheet metal body work. What retard would be scared of "bending a wheel or axle" from strapping it down like a normal person? This one I guess.

Their children have enough money, that they never have to develop brains.

There is no other car that makes me whip my head around faster than a red 911 with a wale tail I still haven't driven one but I WILL have one some day...

Me too. Maybe a black or silver, though red has always been my color of choice. I've been around tons of these but have never gotten the chance to drive one. One day... one day. When I think sports car, a 911 is typically the first thing to pop into my head. One of my dream cars since I will little.

Isn't that the trailer for the next Fast and the Furriest?

chicksdigmiatas 02-07-2010 02:09 AM

I have officially had my penis tuck in like a scared turtle and duct taped my cornhole... twice. The uber gayness of that video is unmatched by all but gay porn. I will never post anything dealing with sex on wheels on this forum again.

A buddy I race with (millionaire) has a really bad habit of not tieing cars down properly. It's almost scary to walk in the trailer and see the what he has done. He had my FF tied down with straps over the 4 tires, which all deflate in about two days lol.

This is supposed to be the best way to tie down vehicles, since you're not dealing with loading the suspension. I did this with bikes and never had a problem...but have always just used tow hooks on cars.

Bond 02-08-2010 03:10 AM

Not with race slicks, they never seem to stay inflated. I always just loop an a-arm or use axle straps and squinch it down. Insomnia FTL

FWIW I have driven a '85 911 and a '02 boxster and I would much rather drive my miata. The transmission in dad's '85 is horrible, it's a lot like driving a truck except harder to shift. It does have some nice torque though...

The problem with doing this to your race car, though, is that your car's $$$$ suspension is now going to be working over every bump, crack, pothole, etc. in the road. My advice is to use tire straps to keep it from rolling, but also to pre-load the suspension so the trailer's suspension does the work instead of the car's.

jacob300zx 02-08-2010 10:21 AM

A buddy from the local board had this to say...lol

UPDATE:

I described this story to my wife this morning and she told me a facebook friend of her's had recently bought and trailered a porsche to spring tx. So I did some facebook stalking. Even someone on his facebook picture comments told him his tow strap placement was stupid, and his b.s. response was,"It didn't hurt the paint, I am going to paint it anyway". In embarrassed idiot speak that probably means,"It damaged the paint, but I don't want anyone to know about it so I will lie."

mgeoffriau 02-08-2010 10:26 AM

Something I love about this forum is that even threads that start with failpics of someone ruining his Porsche turn into serious discussions about proper trailer tiedown techniques.

Transmission would be the last thing on my mind I can assure you. Any Porsche>>>My Miata.

Wheel tie down straps. Guy could have spent $25 at harbor freight and not had to worry about "bending wheels" or scratching the paint. Hmmm - $25 strap vs new paint job?

(Insert "douchebag" sneeze here)

I would really want to know which is worse:

A.) Loading your high-dollar suspension, and depending on it to maintain tension on the tie-down straps.

B.) Letting the suspension do the -small- amount of work that the trailer's suspension does not take care of, and applying as much tension as you want while the straps are over the wheels.

Remember that in the first example, every bit of tension you have in the strap is equal to the suspension's reaction. You have not only the normal sprung weight of the vehicle, but whatever force you deem necessary to keep the car from moving being applied.

Mobius 02-08-2010 02:35 PM

I would never use straps over bodywork. Looking closely at that porsche, I see a red strap to what looks like possibly the left rear axle, and a chain on the right rear. Chain doesn't appear to be tight though.

Edit: possibly those are to tow hooks? I don't know 911's at all.
