Dude, I'm single. The microwave oven is my friend.

Ben 07-02-2008 04:04 PM

eewwww
the only thing i typically use the microwave for is boiling water

Joe Perez 07-02-2008 04:31 PM

Well, I do also have a small toaster oven that gets a fair workout. But for the most part, those are the primary cooking machines. The stove really only gets used when I need to test thermostats or make pasta. I don't blend my margaritas, and the beer fridge is in a garage that I don't pay the power bill on.

I'd wager that the computers and the power tools in the garage probably account for >50% of the total energy bill, far eclipsing the "normal" domestic uses.

Oh, a few years ago (while living in Ohio) I made what to me seemed like an amazing discovery for both saving power and increasing comfort in the winter months. A heated mattress pad. Like an electric blanket except form-fitted to the mattress- you sleep on top of it. That is the one thing I own that makes never using the furnace tolerable. In the wintertime, it can get down into the 50s around here, but you just fire that baby up an hour before bedtime and crawl into a warm, cozy hearth of a bed, regardless of what temperature it is in the rest of the house.

if my gas bill isn't 120/month my electric is. except in april and september when both are about 30. but then I found out my landlord didn't have a separate gas meter for the basement apartment so I guess I was paying for that too. oh no he di-int. new house is smaller so should be better.

the debate rages on about maintaining temp versus re-cooling. we had a hot tub that was the same way. it was about a wash to leave it hot or cycle it and we decided that you can actually USE it when it's always hot. I guess it depends on how long your work day is and how good your home is insulated.

I have both a small toaster/convection oven and my range has a convection oven. Which is baller as it doesn't require pre-heating and you can cook at a lower temperature for a lesser time. It gets used for roasts and things occasionally, but I far prefer to put large hunks of meat on the grill to smoke or to rotisserie.

I had a heated blanket, but my puppy ate the wires out of it. I opted to replace it with a small oil/electric radiant heater. It's thermostat controlled, so I just dial a temperature on its digital display, and it will keep my bedroom toasty. The rest of the house is kept cool in the winter. I prefer the cool house, but deborah ain't happy unless she's roasting. Compromise. My pimp hand is not so strong as it used to be. She also takes full hot 25 minute long showers, and gets out once the water heater is fully drained--and it's a big @ss heater too.

My electric bill is typically $85, though when very cold outside it's been nearly double.

Commie.

Holy fucking shit... Someone called me a Communist because I'm tired of getting assfucked without lube on a constant basis everywhere I go?

We're in the fourth straight month of record unemployment, the stock market is down 1.4 BILLION dollars this year, price of crude oil is at a fucking all time historical record -- You know, costs more today than in the 1970s when it was "scarce" and fuel was rationed...

The price of everything continues to rise while jobs continue to diminish while pay never seems to move up either.

I personally have a FLEET of vehicles -- 1994 ZX6, 1995 Miata, 2000 Protege, 2006 Mazdaspeed6. Everything there takes 91 octane fuel sans the Protege (THANK GOD) which is why I bought it. Driving 3500+ miles a month was fucking murder on the Mazdaspeed. Earlier tonight I paid $4.09 a gallon for 87 octane fuel and put 12 gallons in my Protege. Thats only fuckin' Fifty bux. My company pays me for fuel per the Government EPA rating of the 2000 Protege, which I believe is 32mpg. I'll be god damned if that car has ever passed 30mpg and typically gets 27. Basically every time I drive somewhere for work I lose money. Thats around 130 gallons of fuel a month I buy at around an average of $3.90 a gallon recently. $505.00/month out of pocket and am reimbursed for only $427.

I Digress..

Basically what you're saying is its wrong of me to expect my wonderful government to protect the interests and financial wellbeing of its people?? Instead, lets legalize a "controlled" and "Illegal" substance to tax the fuck out of it and make more money! :hustler::jerkit::vash::bang: Then fuck me silly, I guess I AM a communist! Looks like I'll be voting for Obama Bin Laden the Magic Negro. :bang::bowrofl:

wait....what? What are we talking about here?

Another interesting thing to consider is how much of the world's oil reserves are now nationalized, and by people who aren't looking to get along with us. 77% of the world's oil is nationalized while only 10% is controlled by western multinational corporations whereas in the 60's they had more than 80% control. Suddenly Russia, Venezuela and even Kazakhstan have a lot more money for weaponry and wielding influence over their neighbors. Not to mention the fact that they could give a rats ass about complying with human rights or environmental standards that Big Oil was at least somewhat shamed into complying with.

Think people are gonna get the years of their life back they spent in jail because smoking grass is currently illegal, if this goes through? This is just another sad example of the legal system. :(

According to the United States Department of Energy we're (USA) the number 3 producer of Crude oil. Hmm. Also in 2007 our total dependence on Crude Oil Import was ONLY 58%.. While thats > half, its still not what they want us to believe.

Oh no.. Are you gonna go all E-Thug on me now? I'm not the one who coined him the "magic negro" and if a national source of news and radio show hosts can call him that, I most certainly can. While it might not have been in the best tastes, again I'm NOT the one who coined him that.

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/...opinion-center

FWIW I'm not a racist, and for all you know I'm black. If my remark had been racially motivated as hate directed to him, you'd know it. It wasn't, because I'm not. Just like John Fucking Kerry his grand plan is way too precious to share with the country. What he has shared with us scares the fucking shit out of me and I Hope to god he isn't elected. My discontent for him has nothing to do with the color of his skin. Afterall, hes only HALF black anyway.

If you want to go E-Thug on someone for being Racist, start with Hustler for using the "N" word very freely before trying to call ME out as a racist.

y8s 07-03-2008 11:21 PM

FYI just because someone famous uses racial slurs doesn't mean it's ok for everyone to use them. because there's a lot of people in the KKK...

I'm all for drilling offshore - if it's actually drilled.
Here is my problem: Exxon/Mobil in the Q1 analyst call stated that they expect world demand to increase 8 percent, while they intend to grow their supply by 2%. When asked why they were deliberately investing so little in new supply, the CEO stated they were not in the business of providing the nation oil, they were in the business of maximizing shareholder value. That is, short supply is the best way to make the most money for shareholders.

The US government has leased 25 billion barrels that are allowed to be drilled today. Most of this is not being drilled. We have 13b that is offshore or in the ANWAR refuge.

The oil companies want these leases not to drill them, but to lock them up so they can control demand.

If we want to allow drilling, let's either demand that the companies actually drill, or even better... let the government act as the prime contractor and get the oil to market.

To compare to another industry, in Radio/television/cell, the FCC requires companies to use the spectrum they win at auction. How come the oil companies can get leases for the purpose of controlling oil supply?

How is negro a racial term?

I consider someone saying African American a more offensive racial term. 99% did not come from, or been to, Africa, and most will never go there, even if it was free. So they are just AMERICANS. From now on you can call me British American.

If the oil companies would stop being major douche's. We'd all be driving around in souped up electric cars!

You're going to have to explain to me how the oil companies are contributing to people not driving electric cars, because I don't see the connection. The reason that I personally do not drive an electric car is that the majority of EVs presently available are what I call punative vehicles. In other words, it seems that the designers are saying "You know, you really shouldn't be driving at all. But if you must drive, you're going to have to suffer for it in this heap of dung." There are a few that I'd actually like to drive (Tesla, Aptera, etc), however these are presently priced slightly out of my comfort level at the present time.

Actually, I can think of one way in which oil companies are preventing people from driving EVs (or even more energy efficient ICE vehicles) and that is by providing gasoline far too cheaply. Which brings me to...

Duh! Seriously, man. Every time gas goes up a nickel I make a couple hundred bucks. This isn't rocket science! People talk about "The Shareholders" like they're an elite fraternity who wear robes made of lemur skin and invoke pegan rituals at their hidden fortress inside a volcano. Wake up, man. I'm a shareholder! My mother is a shareholder! Anybody with a coupld hundred bucks, a web browser, and a couple hours' a month to do some research can be a shareholder. Quit your whining and get on board.

If you want the serious answer, it's because the Communications Act of 1934 implores broadcast media to serve the "public interest, convenience, and necessity." Between that, and the fact that bandwidth is considered to be "scarce", it is unacceptable for it to be wasted or misused.

Father is from Cuba, his father is from Spain. Mother is from Ohio, of German, Irish, and Portuguese descent. Just call me Terran-American. :D
