We spend a lot of time and engery on our cars, but anyone doing as much with their home 2-channel rig or their home theater? Tunes Baby!

Here is a picture taken recently during an audio meet at my house. The speakers on the stools and the chip amp on the floor were part of the demo and not my regular system.

Martin Logans? Not sure of any other companies who make electrostats, just ML as that's what my BIL has. I used to be more into it than I am now. Built many a sub and have a decent HT setup in the basement. I still run some old school car audio amps in the Miata.

How to make Electrostatic Loudsp

I went to three garage sales and spent a combined $50 to make my 36" TV, DVD + VHS, tuner/amp, and twin tower speaker setup.

It is ghetto.

It still rocks.



Seriously, we are working on a nice setup in the bedroom, it has started with a Sharp 32" HDTV and JBL speakers.

I think we have the same TV.

My audio is a cheap 5.1 computer speaker system. All my TV/movie watching comes from my computer via HDMI.

The tv is a Samsung LN52A750. It even recognizes my wife's iPod.

My wife and I just bought a cheapy Costco Panasonic surround set up for the TV with "wireless" rear speakers. Of course wireless simply means you have to run wires to the speakers from the wireless receiver unit. Hard to hide that crap.

Does make a huge difference in sound vs the TV's speakers.

My 2 channel rig in the living room uses DIY speakers. Again picture taken during the same audio meet. Yellow tube amp on the black isolaiton table on the floor I built and is not part of the system.

42" 1080p Panasonic plasma with a Yamaha 5.1 surround system with active sub. DirecTV HD DVR and PS3 both hooked up via HDMI for video and with sound sent to my receiver with optical.

Probably not the best setup for true audiophiles, but works fantastically to me.

Holy hell Wardsweb that looks like a really nice turntable. The platter looks huge. I am guessing that is for RPM stability. Reminds me of that turntable they showed in one of the Tomb Raider movies during the foyer sexy bungee cord workout. I only noticed it because Jolie's boobs were not in frame at that moment.

I'm selling off all the above on CL right now... and a few more things I've been hoarding. I have no room for a dedicated HTR in the new house, so I'm going to invest in a sweet pair of bookshelfs to flank my (SOON TO BUY THE EXACT SAMSUNG THAT Wardsweb LINKED) and probably a small decent 2-channel receiver to power them. They'll be helped out by my next DIY sub. I'm going with a fucking serious 8" driver... it's gotta be small to fit behind the TV which will be in the corner... but in a properly designed box, this thing should play louder and deeper than any 10" you can find at BB/CC, and be practically invisible.

The most heart stopping subs I've ever owned were dual BASSMAXX folded horn cabinets each with an 18" McCauley 6174. It could literally shake the foundation of the house. Alas, at 4' x 4' x 22" the new house can't hold them.

Nothing special here. Onkyo HT-S770 HTIB 6.1 (setup as 5.1 though), Samsung 50" DLP, 360, PS3.

Looks good enough and sounds good enough for now. Bought everything off of craigslist, put it all together under $1600

I'm a fan... but no more than your average guy is a fan of all legendary athletes. Look at both pics of my HTR. I had 2 black&white photos on that wall... they were just bad-ass pictures when I was looking for something appropriately manly to put on the wall. I thought boxing and motorcycles would do. The one on the left is classic scene from Easy Rider.

I'm not familiar with my roommates setup but I get to use his Sony 1080 HD Projector to the 93 inch screen in the living room.. Complete with a massive, but effective 7.1 surround.

My personal is a family hand me down of a Pioneer Elite 1080p 60" Plasma and a Bose Lifestyle 6.1 system. I was literally just told I could have it and i have absolutely no idea how I can set this up in my tiny apartment bedroom. Apparently my father is upgrading.

Lets see... I gather that's a ribbon tweeter with a mid horn and 15 or 18? but I dont recognize the ribbon.

Not Rocky Mountain, that is my living room. The drivers are top to bottom: Altec 511B horn w/Altec 802-8g compression driver, JBL 077 slot tweeter and JBL 2235H woofer.

The cabinet is a combination of Baltic birch and MDF. Internal bracing was CNC and the sides are 4 layers of kerf MDF. The kerf channels are filled with #10 glass beads used in bead blasting (finer than sand). The inside walls are sprayed with dampening material and have fiberglass batting. They use two 4" rear ports and weight over 300 pounds each.

Actually, if I could finish speakers to be aesthetically pleasing, I would have gone this route back when I was shopping and built my sub, and was aware of the deals Adire, Madisound and PE were offering.

In the end I just ended up building my sonosub with an Adire Shiva and bought some Axiom Audio monitors and surrounds to go with my projector.

No time anymore with working on the car, spending time with the kid, and doing general home improvements and crap.

So how much is a 5 year old girl worth? :)

I have an old focal 15" sub in my house and shitty jbl 5-way shit. It gets the job done...one day I'll both go home and get a house so I can watch boys n tha hood and crank that shit.

The speakers in my green car are soooooo bad that I'm probably going to do the headphone thing next time I drive it. I should probably drop some cash and get something decent.

HC5500 projector, DIY 120" Screen, DIY Projector Ceiling Mount, Onkyo SR-806, Klipsch RF-82 speaker setup.

Room is 15'x20', Love seat against one wall with 37" LCD hanging above (behind my head) it. On the opposing wall is the screen with projector in the middle of the ceiling. To the right of the love seat is a closet - I cut the wall out and made a shelf system to harbor all electronics. Wired all speakers when I installed the hard wood floors. Painted the wall with the projector screen in Flat Gun Metal Blue. In the middle of the room is a Brunswick pool table...cherry finish with Black felt (so light reflection isn't an issue).

I couldn't find black out curtains to my liking...so I fab'd some using left over suede from my interior install in my ML.

Not nearly as good as everyone else, but it works.

actually it's more that I can't afford to audition speakers that cost more than a miata and bring them into my house.

i might still build my own if i had the money, but it would certainly take it to a new level of automation!

wardsweb, that name sounds familiar, from audioasylum maybe? I've been a member on AA since about '99 (even have the yo-yo somewhere) but don't think I've posted there in the past couple years.

I was more into audio when I was in grad school and couldn't yet afford the Miata, which has been the focus of more of my time and money lately. The audio system could definitely use some attention. Those CAD-300Ms were hand-me-downs when dad upgraded his system, but now they need new output tubes and that's a lot of scratch when each monoblock runs four 300Bs. I scored a good deal on the Acurus to hold me over. I also need new speakers- had the C-2s since college and they're decent for a small room, but my sources are probably worthy of a bit more. Maybe when we finish renovating the new house I'll treat myself to some new floor-standers. And a turntable.

Could be AA, Bottlehead (Doc's site links mine on how to build some of his gear) or any one of a couple dozen sites I'm on. I also webmaster Audiokarma.org and Lonestarbottleheads.org All you have to do is Google or Yahoo Wardsweb and you will get many pages of me.

Those Cary's are sweet amps, but like you said can use some coin to retube.
I too have a Philips 1000 sitting on the shelf that died. I may dig into it one day. I have the parts for the retrofit repair but like you my Miata is getting a lot more of my attention than my audio these days.

However, I do have a *functioning* 1934 Philco AM tabletop in my study that belonged to my grandparents...

Definitely bottlehead then, used to do a LOT of reading there, even went to one of the bottlehead gatherings when I lived in Houston. My FP is one of the early ones, built it in 2000. It has the C4S, stepped attenuators, and a few other little mods. The original kit could very well be the best $99 I ever spent, and was undoubtedly the tube audio crack that started many down the road to addiction.

I've always wanted a setup made by Cadence but each speaker is worth more than my car!

I'm an audio engineer.. used to run a production studio. Have any of you guys treated your rooms? There's little point in putting a superb playback system in a room that's chock full of phasing issues, bass buildup/cancellation etc.

Bumping this up to build some speakers for my garage. Need help with a simple sub for these:

I'd like to get a driver and plate amp from here:

and build a simple Sonotube. Length of the tube doesn't matter but I think I'll be limited to a 10 inch speaker. Anyone want to run some of the subs on the above page 10 inches or less (length can be up to 4 feet) through WinISD (y8s, I'm talking to you)? It'll be a bit underpowered, but I'll probably use that $50 plate amp too. It doesn't have to go real low, or be audiophile, just a good bang for the buck.

I just dropped a G on a Panasonic AX200u for my basement to replace my old Infocus 4805 so the garage setup is bargain basement budget system. I've already got the building materials for the speakers.
