Will I regret accepting a job offer there?

Is the GF willing to go? I have never been to Oklahoma, but for some reason I think you will regret it. I don't think it can compare in any way to NYC of California.

Do you regret moving to NY? I mean as a place, not job related. I can't imagine 2 cities that are much more different.

You're talking to a guy from NYC that doesn't have a car, that previously had a modded electric bike in California. Unless there's another Oaklahoma City I'm unaware of somewhere in Sweden, or something's snapped and he's ready to go mad max (there are better places for that) this is probably a bad move for him.

I'm in Tulsa and enjoy it. OKC has grown quite a bit in the last few years. A few of my friends have move out there for work and seem to really enjoy it. There is a pretty good following of car enthusiasts in both Tulsa and OKC.

Hallett is close, but other than that, it all depends on what you're comfortable with.

I live in Arlington, essentially a suburb of Dallas, and I can say, that part of Oklahoma is like 10+ years behind.

When passing through, there were actually tollways that did not accept debit/credit cards or even paper money. Some only accepted change, others accepted change and checks. WTF?!?!

Then again, even if you only made half as much as you do currently, you would be twice as wealthy in Oklahoma LOL.

In all seriousness, I know a couple people who moved there to teach at a university. They really like it in terms of cost of living, but hate it in terms of modern living. I have heard there just isn't much to do in comparison to even Arlington, TX. Which is a bit sad...

It's a promotion. Chief Engineer. Meaning that from a technical standpoint, I'd be the top dog in charge of two TV stations (one NBC affiliate, one pissant little independent.) And it's within the company, so I doubt seriously they'd be asking me to take a pay cut. This offer was dropped on me by the corporate SVP of Technology last night on his way out the door. We haven't had the money conversation yet, but let's say I'd be making somewhere in the vicinity of $120-125k in OKC. Here in NYC, that job has a VP title attached to it; I could probably finagle the same out there.

I'd be moving from the #3 spot at the #5 station in market #1 to the #1 spot at the #1 station in market #44. They recently decided to construct a new building to house the two stations in the market, so it'd be all shiny and new.




Pros:

Resume booster. When I get bored and decide to move on in a few years, I can tack CE to the list.

Housing is fairly cheap. 2 car garages (with attached 3/2 home) can be had for $1300-1400 a month, or $250-300k to buy.

I get to build a two-station facility literally from the slab up. Two studios, control rooms, newsroom, helicopter hanger, two radar stations (one of which is 1 Megawatt)... All mine.


Cons:

No In-n-out.

Still 185 miles to the nearest Fry's.

I've never actually lived in Texas full-time, but I have spent a few months in Addison (northern suburb of Dallas), and it wasn't the worst thing in the world. Honestly, I'm pretty flexible. I've lived in Georgia, Florida, Cinci, Cleveland, SoCal, NorCal, NYC and the NYC suburbs.

I'd rather make that salary, and spend twice as much on housing and COL than live in that shithole.

Yeah, I moved out to the 'burbs last September and bought an '04. It's stock except for a warm air intake kit which I am too lazy to do anything about. So now I have a nearly two hour commute each way twice a day. Drive to the train station, take the train into Grand Central, walk to work.

Rinse, repeat.

Again, I am considering this to be a transitional step, much as moving to NYC from SoCal was in the first place. I need to move sufficiently far up in the world of TV that I can write my own ticket back to a cushy OEM job in Europe or the west coast.
