They use them at hershey park in PA. They seem to work well. I think this is the most constructive feedback I can help you with on speakers that look like rocks :)

I have a pair of Bose marine speakers that have been outside for over 10 years and they are still going strong.

As much as I hate Blose, my brothernlaw has some Bose Free Space speakers that are pretty friggin rediculous.

I will advise to make sure you have a look at the sensitivity of the speakers you're going to buy. If you're like me, your outdoor speakers will be on the B channels of the receiver in your den. If you buy low sensitivity speakers, the volume inside the house will be fine, but barely audible outside... hence my outside speakers are really just some background noise.

Check the parts express website. Use a seperate amp to power the speakers and then put a volume knob near the door or even outside. Here is your volume knob, and the Dayton amplifier lower down the page would be a good match to just about anything you'd be thinking of:

I agree with this, but suggest you look for used amps on ebay. Look for Sonance, Niles, Parasound, Adcom. One of my favorite bargains is the Sonance 260 or 260x3. You can usually pick one up for ~$75 on ebay, and they're tough little suckers. Plus they auto turn on/off. But any of what I listed will be more than fine, and used examples are cheap. For the volume control look at Niles, Sonance, Russound. Cheap VC's suck bad, so get a good one.
