painting wheels
hey guys, I want to refinnish my stock alloys. they are kind of shabby and I basically want to take some fine grit sand paper to them, then rattle can some stock-like color on to make them look better.
so my questions are -what methods should i use -what color spray can looks most like the stock alloy color |

halfway down the page...its like the third project...use that paint...not sure on the grit, I prolly wouldn't go less than 220. I'll be doing a set of wheels soon. |
I just kinda used some regular sandpaper to rough them up a little. I used duplicolor gunmetal ( 3 coats, 10 min in between each ) and then 2 coats of clear ( 10 min in between ).
|
I used a green dish scrubber pad to scuff them, then sprayed on some rustoleum. Make sure to use some clear on top. I swear by the duplicolor engine paint...the ceramic stuff lasts forever.
|
so would you go duplicolor engine, or duplicolor wheel paint since they make both?
|
i like the duplicolor 1200* ceramic stuff, it worked for 8 years on another set of wheels I ran on a different car. Here is the rustoleum on my car about 4 months old, with hawk hp+.

Looks good!
My TTP for masking the tire is to stick index cards in the crease around the rim. works pretty good. |

I hate the color actually, but I got a good deal on it, and some fresh paint done right: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...801_3_full.jpg then in trade it went to this: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...801_1_full.jpg which is the same color as this: http://perso.orange.fr/lolo.gege/24h...06/2006_69.jpg |

I like posting it on m.net, so people freak about about me "ruining the value" of my old ass one of thousands miata. It came out much better than I thought it would. |
When I first read your post about m.net people freaking out, my first though was "are you for real" and then realization kick in and I wasn't surprized any more. Fuck what they say, that color is the shit.

I really wanted to paint it silver, but i decided to get free paint in trade. |
Wet sand!!! That will give the best results.
Huster: paint looks good. My friend is roller painting his 240 with rustoleum. I like the gloss. I may try it on my car. I'm a little to lazy to do all the wetsanding though. I'll just get my friend to do it. |

I think its funny when people try to tell me I "ruined" a "collector" car. Its a fucking miata, not an italian or muscle car.
