Passing NYS inspections
 

Any of you NY members want to chime in on inspections? I'll hopefully be bringing my car up to mid to late Feb ( or whenever they stop using salt on the roads ), and I'm curious as to how inspections are handled here. Some things are a confusing me a bit. The NYS DMV site says:

So that makes me think my 90 is exempt. But:

So.. then.. it's not? I feel like I'm missing something. I've heard that I'd probably just get a visual inspection then get issued my sticker since it's a 90 while I've read online that they might hook me up to a sniffer along with having some slack jawed chud drive my car. I'll be boosted then so who knows what kind of nightmare that's going to cause.

Where in NY? I think downstate in NYC and Westchester County they use a sniffer. Up here, it's SUPPOSED to be a visual. If you find a 'friendly' shop, the visual may be up for negotiation. In a visual, if you stfu, even with an aftermarket turbo setup, if you have a cat in place (or something that looks like a cat), you should be ok. If you are going to be in the Capital District, you are in like Flynn. LMK.

Buffalo as my location says. Hmm, so if that's the case I may be alright. From all my reading it sounded like they were going to be pretty tight ass about it. Do they usually go through and mess with your lights, blinkers and all that jazz? If so I'm not sure my lights are going to pass since I technically don't have a high beam.

Lol, I just read the FL part of the location. You need to sign in to empirestateroadsters.net, most of those guys are in Buffalo, and will know all about what needs to happen there for inspection.

They DO test lights, horn, look at at least one brake, e-brake, blinkers, etc. Pretty sure high beam would be part of that.

On my 90 they would go *honk honk* "Horn works" *flick lights* "Lights work" *wiggle steering wheel* "steering feels good" *Print sticker* "That'll be $$" (This was in Niagara Falls FYI)

Edit: Read through the thread. Lights was turn signals, brake lights, head lights, reverse lights. I dont think I ever had high beams tested, ever.

Why not keep it Florida registered ?

Once you touch FL soil, register and leave it like that forever, you can almost drive a funny car on public roads.

Is that even an option? I'd opt for this if I could get away with it. Everything says you need to be registered within so many days and have in state insurance otherwise it's rate cheating etc. I mean, I've got family back in FL if that makes a difference and I have thought about it. I just can't imagine a way to work that.

Seriously. I loved owning cars in FL.

As long as you are a resident of Florida, no need to change registration to NY.

I am in the military, so maybe I can choose which state to stay with. I dont know if people who work in the private sector must change to the state they live on. At least with military as long as you do the taxes, have everything up to date.

About the rates on the insurance, that is true. Once again I had a car with California registration and had no problems changing insurance to FL with USAA. I will check with some of my supervisors and some of the contractors, there are plenty of cars on our base with Alaska, and even Puerto Rico license plates.

If you have a FL address I would think you could get away with at least a year or two. The stupid front tag would annoy me more than the inspection. And why are you going to Buffalo, your going the wrong way down a dead-end steet.

Long story why I'm in Buffalo. Not looking forward to the font tag either but I'll live I suppose. I renew my registration in November so it seems like a bit of a waste to change it over in Feb. I've got a FL address, I'm just not sure if it's worth keeping it registered there if anything happens.
