Picked up a new toy today. GSXR 750

Picked up a new toy today. 1997 GSXR 750. It doesnt have to best paint but theres no cracks in the plastic and its in amazing shape mechanically (16k on the odo) Has new tires and a leo vince pipe. All in all I couldn't pass it up for only $1600. At first I was a little weary about white rims but they really grew on me and now I wouldn't have them in any other color. Plus all my gear is black/white/grey https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6...0/IMG_2904.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-A...0/IMG_2898.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Z...0/IMG_2900.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-y...0/IMG_2905.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Z...0/IMG_2902.JPG |
Very niiiice!!!
|
Very nice, I love this bike. Personally I prefer the white/blue GSXR colors, but at $1600 and 16k on the odo, you sure can't pass it up.
|
Thanks guys, ya I love it. I'm trying to figure out what to do with it to kinda spice up the look just a tad just to break up the all-one-colorness. I'm looking on ebay, for $30 I can get an all white decal kit that I think will look pretty good. Threw something together in paint in like 2 minutes but you get the idea...

dont like the chromey frame, but 1600 is a steal, nice pickup!
|
Polishing the rear subframe helps, makes it match the rest of the frame.
Very nice bike, I might be picking up another one myself this week. |
Nice deal! I'm not as familiar as I used to be with old gixxers but I think that era's 900 engine bolts in. If at some point you need to replace the 750 mill.
EDIT: I may be thinking of the kawasaki's. Disregard. |
are you black?

You *watched* this happen? You sure are a deuchebag of a homeboy. Should have pulled the remington 12ga out of the back seat of your bronco and blasted that bitch.
|

Good deal on a nice bike...regardless of the rep the "Gixxer" gets.
Adjust the valves and give it a better color combo and enjoy. |

Thanks gospeed |
Ugh it's snowballing into a nightmare! The key broke off in the ignition, tried removing the ignition and while fiddling with one of the ignition wires had a tiny hole in it or something because it arced between the wire and the frame via the Allen wrench I was using. Little spark didn't think much of it. Well fast forward a few hours past giving up on removing the ign, making a lock pick tool out of a Bobby pin, fishing the key out, having a new key made... Having a second new key made that finally works... Getting on to ride it to work and realizing there's no power to the bike! Argh! Now I'm heading to the parts store to pick up a main fuse. All of it's 100% my fault but it's frustrating none the less lol!
EDIT: Got everything going again, only took 5 minutes to replace main fuse but still had to call into work. Oh well I got some paid time off built up. I guess I can wire up my wideband gauge in the mata this afternoon. |
Is it just me or is the rear lowered? If it is please fix that squid bullshit.
|
This was before thin rear body work was popular, there's a lot of plastic back there, it might be an illusion sorta thing, or a saggy shock.
That ignition is not a "snowball". I'm thinking of picking up a $450 1988 Katana 600 this week, if anything, that's going to be a snowball of new parts being dumped into it. |
lol ya just started with something stupid and just kept getting bigger. But after I replaced the main fuse everything was good. Went on a short ride tonight and had a blast, feels so good. Ya its its got a lowering link, looks like its about in the middle. Definitely not going to lower it any but I kinda like the stance as it is.

These men speak the truth. If you hang with some real riders, I bet 80% or better jack the ass end UP. Lowering is for midgets and fakes... or fake midgets.
both my bikes have the ride height adjustment maxed high. quick steering>everything. |
it's all about the street racing lifestyle

If you haven't done one before then look into a trackday. Even in L1 you'll do so much more out there than you could ever do on the track you'll calm down a lot on the street and know your real limits. This could considerably lengthen your riding career. |
good deal! looks to be in good condition
|
Fucker sold my $450 Katana 600 before I even had a chance to look at it. I want a fully faired bike.... |

Well you guys have to remember I didn't lower the ass it came this way lol, I'll raise it up just not real high on my list atm, got some miata stuff I need to tinker with first when I get some free time (work full time and school full time = not alot of wrench time) . Track day would be fun though, would love to go out and test my limits without having to worry about gravel/cars/animals/cops etc
|
Nice score. I must second Jake in the Busa = Obama Klan member thing, at least around our "hood".

I'm going back naked. Love being able to see the motor and get to things. Still miss my shitty SV beater bike. I have my naked Suzuki gs700 for a sex magnet. I want fairings for wind protection, my commute is 17 miles, 13 of which are on the freeway. My dream bike is a ninja 650r, hopefully I'll be able to buy my friend's for about $2500 in the next year or so. It's incredibly comfortable and smooth. Plenty of power with good mileage still. Kawasaki's SV. |

I was going to step up to one after the EX500 many many years ago and didn't. Still regret not trying it. Great street bike in so many ways, and yeah, basically a faired SV, without being a rare, faired, SV lol. Good luck with that. |
Saw one local for $1800, mismatched tank with a small dent and salvaged title. So tempting...
|
Id stay away from salvage, there a pia to get registered, if it's even possible. Most places it's technically possible but nobody I've heard froms ever been able to do it.

It may just be a combination of our state insurance laws and lax inspections...but there are a LOT of bikes that get dropped at low speed and the cost to replace all the fairings and exhaust causes the bike to be totaled. Owner takes the check, buys back the bike (cheap) and then has no problem selling it very cheaply on craigslist. I've bought two bikes like this that were in perfect mechanical condition, were easy to get inspected, registered, insured and titled, and turned out to be decent lookers after a little bit of eBaying and painting. |
If you haven't already figured it out, pay attention to the power band on this bike. My 96 was slow until ~ 9k. In first, if you grabbed a good handful of throttle, you would think to yourself this pulls ok. At 9k, the power band hit like a switch and you could eat some top triple clamp before you could say "oh shit." You might consider a steering stabilizer if it does not already have one. Mine suffered from some mild wobble that snuck up on me and went full blown tank slapper to off road excursion to ass slider to no more gixxer.
|
Haven't looked too much into the totaled title laws here in Oregon, but I imagine they can't be that bad. My friend had his Honda sports tourer totaled because of a small scratch on the frame after a guy knocked it over in the parking lot, so it doesn't take much. He was looking to get rid of it, but if it's that easy to total it, I'd hope it's just as easy to register a totaled bike.
Either way, those 650r's go for sub $3000 a couple times a week on the local CL. Just wish it was easier to get a $3000 loan. |
Anybody know if you can put full coverage on a salvage/rebuild bike? Because I know I've heard you cant but not certain. Just wondering because I'm pretty sure you have to have full coverage on a bike that you financed/borrowed for.
Also, what exactly is the stabilizer for? I understand the concept and what it does/how it works but I've never had a situation were I'd benefit from it. Does it just keep you from going into a speed wobble if you set down a wheelie cawkeyed? |
Honestly not sure on full coverage for a salvaged bike. I've also heard it is hard to do. I've never had a bike with a note and therefore never had full coverage as the cost is exorbitant compared to replacement value. Usually a year's premiums is equivalent to 60% of a bike's value, so you could instead put that money aside and end up ahead as long as you only total a bike every other year...and that's assuming there's no parts you can sell off the wrecked bike.
Steering dampers are a must-have on many of the high-powered bikes, although some chassis are more susceptible to wobbles than others. The Bandit 1200 would lift and set down the front wheel all day without any drama, but the CBR 900&929 were absolute beasts that would bite you any day of the week. This was a completely modded bandit with a similar power level, but the bike was heavier and had more relaxed steering geometry. Repli-racers in general have very aggresive steering angles and light weights that play a lot into the equation. The damper isn't just for keeping a set down calm, but also comes into play powering out of corners (especially on track), and even heavy straight-line acceleration. Tank slappers are no fun at all. |
Ditto everything above and I'll add some. My adventure did not involve a wheelie. I was shifting from the top of second into third (clutchless) and apparently I was putting a little to much force into the throttle. The front never came up but was very light. When I shifted, I either hit a pavement change or the front tire became unloaded and slightly cocked from excessive throttle input. The rest I would rather not experience ever again.
If you have the extra coin, look into a Scott's damper. When I put one on my R1, they were more popular for dirt bikes. I figured if they worked for them, they should work great on the street. It worked fantastic! If I ever get another street bike, that damper would be on my short list. |
Ya I'll look into it, my roomate ha a Scott damper sitting on his desk at the moment, might look into haggling for it lol. Gotta find a mount though
|
I'm almost positive that your bike has a spot on the frame to put one of the old style shocks on. They come in handy I would suggest getting one. You won't know you need it until you tank slap that first time...not fun.
|
Actually ya we just realized that a few days ago. We didn't know what the hell it was until I saw somebody talking about a frame mounted stabilizer on gixxer.com
