Pikes Peak international hill climb 2012
Anyone here going? I'll be up there all weekend for it, should be rad. I'll be in my miata, mariner blue, rollbar, hardtop, fmic, enkei 16" wheels, etc to recognize me. Holla if you see me! I plan on hiking around and checking out some different vantage points if I can. Will be camping at a campground nearby as well.
|
Not going but it's in my backyard, and the fan appreciation hootenanny is 2 blocks down the street from my office. Where are you camping? How long are you here? We can gay it up in our matching cars :giggle:
|
When is it?
|
Hillclimb is July 8th, 6th/7th is FanFest and random stuff in town and on the mountain. First year it's fully paved, too, so I'd guess that the record set last year is going to fall.
|
No dirt, no care.

Sounds like a plan though, never seen another boosted miata IRL so that sounds badass. I'd love to check out your car. My brother will be up there in his sr20 swapped s14, and my buddy with his subaru lesbo wagon will be coming as well. We could go drive some nice roads or something. I'll PM you with some more details when I get them ironed out and my number so we can get together. |

Hmm, my brother actually got the spot reserved - so I'll update you later with that.

Postponed
Pikes Peak Hill Climb postponed | pikes, hill, postponed - WALDO CANYON FIRE - Colorado Springs Gazette, CO Tom Osborne, chairman of the board of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, is clear on this point: The 2012 edition of the race will happen, despite being postponed by the Waldo Canyon Fire. “We’re going to conduct a 90th running,” Osborne said Wednesday night. “There’s no question about that. It’s just like a baseball game that’s been postponed. We’re going to make it up.” Osborne is not sure of the date of the 2012 race, but said he expects the Hill Climb will run “early September, late August.” The fire is still going strong. A big chunk of a neighborhood on the NW side of town burned to the ground last night. I was listening to a live stream of the fire/medic radio and it was unbelievably tense...the area is still burning 24hrs later. My house is about 3-4 miles away, across a major interstate from the closest fires, so I'm safe at this point. But thousands of people (including my gf's daughter) have been evacuated from their homes locally. I've never seen anything like it, and I was here a decade ago when the Hayman fire was burning (that ended up being 137K acres). It is truly surreal. I drove (unknowingly) within a half mile of the most intense fire yesterday, right as the evacuation was happening. I'll post some pics from that drive when I get a break from work. |
Rescheduled for August 12th.
|
I'll be there! Can't wait..

I might be down for it too, but I'll be hiking in. No way I am at the mercy of those fools for road control and I'm not paying jack for it either. Last year we sat in a parking lot for 4 hours before they let us out to merge with traffic at all. No exaggeration. It was just decided that we would be the last lot to leave I guess. It was far worse than past years. I like cops, they have a tough job and I respect that. But we had two of the biggest douchebags POS powertrip bitter because they can't get laid ------- cops ever. They sat at the exit, and did not move. They were unaffected by polite rational questions as to WTF was going on.
This was after we watched a biker get a rear wheel off on one corner, shoot across the road, and land headfirst into a pile of rocks. We could not move him/do CPR because it was obvious if we did he was dead. So basically we kept him still and ran about ineffectually for 15 goddamn minutes trying to find a way to contact magical disappearing race crew/medics. We managed to get a cell signal and call 911 for the guy. I have no clue how he made it. Those morons took their sweet time getting to him and figuring out WTF was going on. "Hugh Bill, there were 4 riders in a tight group 3 miles back at station 6, now there's 3 riders, and they went by 2 minutes ago. Maybe we should check on that." The people that run that race are idiots. Its a real shame, it was a lot better that way back in the day. |
Pro tip for all you non-Colorado guys who may be checking out the race: be prepared for any weather event, from 90*+ heat to hail to snow. It snowed on the mountain yesterday :)

That would not surprise me a bit. IIRC the Unlimited cars go up early, before the weather usually hits the fan around 3pm, so I figure the record will fall again if it stays dry and the cars don't break.

BUMP for this event. This weekend. If any of you gays come up it looks like me and Matthew are going to have a mini mt.net meet. And by mini, i mean just me and him.

Small MTnet gathering is small. Crowded canyon roads driven, beers consumed, roll races undertaken. Hope you and Brian didn't get cooked up there on the mountain today, Nate :D

Wooot! So I just got home.. 2am now. I work at 7, but IDGAF. Saturday was great Matthew, I had a blast man! I swear if i didn't have a passenger it would have been a better race. I've gotta get that video up for some others to enjoy, tomorrow.
Now.. Matthew, you have to fucking go watch pikes peak next year. Sitting on the side of that mountain was the best 10 hours I've had in forever. I've never seen people go so balls to the wall in an open canyon. There were 3 people (that I know of) life lighted out, which sucked - but that gives you an idea of how insane these people were driving. I personally saw 2 wrecks, and there were 10+ if you include the 3 bikes that went down. Never in my life have i seen such insanity, to anyone wondering if its worth taking the trip to pikes peak, then YES it is. On a side note the trip ended up to about 700 miles. Thats a pretty good chug in a modified miata, at least for me it is ;). |
OH yeah, and this happened. THESE PEOPLE ARE FUCKING NUTS. Honestly guys I had no idea what I was in for at pikes peak. I'm planning on going every year now.
Open wheel car throttle got stuck... |
Oh and here's a video of me getting walked on by matthew. I didn't realize until later my car was only making 10psi here, as well as the whole trip. Uhmm, i also had a passanger, 50lbs of shit in my trunk, and i had a tummy ache, and ummm.. i can't think of anymore excuses. JK matt, your car runs very nice.
|
Props for tossing up that video haha
Glad you guys had a good time up there on the mountain. I read that the weather got shitty and the finish line had to be moved down to Glen Cove. Did you get caught in any of that? |

And yeah, we caught the bad weather and stayed till the end. Me and Brian hiked about 6 miles up and were in the alpines near where that Evo wrecked, then hiked down when the weather started showing signs of shittyness so I didn't make it to the top . Next year I will hike to the peak(weather permitting). The rain actually made it very interesting, we posted up on a good turn and watched all the guys dorifto by. The time attack class was amazing, the diesel truck that made 4,000 ftlbs of torque was insane to watch it skate through the turns. I will post up some pics from the event later. I'm not exaggerating when I say this. I've been to countless drag racing events, watched track days with full blown race cars, been to a few drift events, etc. As far as spectating goes, NOTHING else automotive even comes close to comparing to the excitement of witnessing these cars/bikes/quads/etc go flat out through one of the most treacherous canyons in the US. I would compare it to what I imagine watching a rally race would be like. You pick where you want to stand, and hopefully you made a good decision or a car could be coming at you out of control. I saw people standing on the outside of some of the gnarliest apex's, just asking for a car to slide into them and end their lives. So damn cool. I'm sure I'll see you next year ;). quite possibly sooner though, because now I have to drive that road in my car, or at least on my bike. |
