Plasti Dip Experiment

A friend has a Fox body he just got back together and its currently being tuned. He did completely new interior from plastics to carpet to seats. It looks great and mechanically he went through EVERYTHING.

It was his dad's before he passed away and my buddy said hes gonna get it back to running (required TONS of work) and use it as a DD.

Well its almost there. He had someone lined up to respray it black but it fell through and while hes waiting to find someone to paint it, he wanted to make it more presentable, so I told him we should try our hands at plasti dip since its reversible.

Ive done some small experiments with it out of a can, well I got my sprayer and a few gallons and wanted to spray a body panel,

So i went to the body shop and got a trashed bumper, I guess it's off a mazda 3.

It was black thats all I needed.

Overall really surprised how it turned out. I didnt follow any of the directions about how to spray it I just pulled a juan williams and went with my heart. The white was a pain in the but to spray, apparently its thinner. I got some runs in the first coat of white but I just sprayed over it and they went away. I think I did 5 or 6 coats of white. The base coat changed the final color a little.

The blue sprayed really easily and covered well. Cant see any tiger striping and I wasnt careful at all in my spray patterns. Texture wasnt bad at all and it covered up all the imperfections except the holes.

I handled the bumper like 20 minutes after spraying and it was dry to the touch and bending all over the place with no damage to the dip.

My dad told me it would look like hell and I half expected it to, but we were both pleasantly surprised at how it came out, it has some texture but less than expected especially with my half ass spraying.

Gonna start experimenting with colors and try and make a pearl white to spray the hill billy mobile in. The owner of the Fox is supposed to come over and check the bumper out later, then we are gonna let it sit the in the TX sun for a week or two and see how it peels off.

I'm surprised at how much of a difference the base coat made. Plastidip seems to be pretty opaque.

They matched my shoes, haha.

It was the first thing my friend noticed when I sent him the pictures.

I have very rusty rocker panels on my truck. Today I cut the entire drivers side rocker panel off, and hopefully this weekend I can sandblast it. When I weld my replacements back on, I thought about coating the whole rocker panel and lower sides of my truck with bed liner material. Now I'm wondering how good this plasti dip stuff will hold up. How durable is it?

I dont know how durable dip is I just put it on, after it cures we are gonna do some testing before we peel it off.

Herculiner is very durable though.

I want to go to Garbage Freight and pick up a cheap-o throw away spray gun...that's what I want to shoot bedliner stuff through. Would Herculiner go through a spray gun?

dieselmiata 07-26-2013 12:55 AM

Not a traditional one. Get an Astro-pneumatic economy undercoating gun. The only cost about 15 bucks and will last a long time.

Awesome!!! Thanks a ton!

I don't do it for the money, I do it for you.

The difference between base coat and not is surprising. Been debating on spraying mine this winter for funsies. Curious what base coats do what to which top coat colors.

Opti 07-26-2013 12:18 PM

White is a pain in the ass to spray and get to cover. Dipyourcar recommends using a grey base coat (covers really well) of 2 coats and then spraying white or red (both dont cover well) on top of it.

There's a fairly ratty Miata on CL locally with some mismatched body panels. Been thinking about lowballing the guy and then plastidipping it.

Hmm.

y8s 07-26-2013 04:12 PM

now can you leave that bumper out in the sun where it'll get full southern exposure all day for a few months?

Thats what it's doing now. My buddy saw it and wanted to peel it off to see how well it came off. So I let him strip half of it. Came off in two pieces. The middle part and the part under the grille.

He noticed its very resilient and stretchy which would be good if someone bumped you or bashed a door/shopping cart into your car.

So now it just sits outside in the sun, and we will try and remove it again when we are ready to shoot the mustang or the camaro.

Dont know how long it will wait though, the mustang is getting dyno tuned in OK and the camaro is about to go down for a full suspension rebuild/upgrade

We will be spraying a friends off rod VW bug for "s"s and "g"s. To get more familair with peeling it off surfaces you dont want painting and how long to wait to pull tape lines.

Wants to do the mustang in a color similar to this

If you do a little reading on dipyourcar most of the issues have been figured out. The guys who had previously put it on too thin and then had a hard time removing it now have a cleaner that dissolves the plastidip the it just has to be sprayed off.

I removed my stock truck spoiler to install a gtc-200 wing about 6 months ago. The stock spoiler left several holes which needed filled then painted. Instead of having a body shop do it and charge out the ass, I decided to go the plastidip route. Even picked up some bondo and started playing with it. Didn't take long to figure it out and get it right. The plastidip came out pretty good and even. Used the gun that dip your car sells. Surprised how well it has held up so far. Ended up doing 5 coats of black. Very neat and fun little diy project.
