Default Coffee Crew: Who has the best, freshest beans commercially available?

I usually go to Whole Foods and pay $18/lb. I've been trying to find something cheaper that's not 30 minute each way. Am I screwed? I just brewed from a brand new bag of "Peet's" and when I opened it, I smelled nothing...like the beans were roasted six months ago.

Haha, that's funny. Peets is great and local, my gf's picky about her coffee, and Peets is her favorite. It's local though, so we probably get much fresher stuff. Go local, that's how you're going to get fresh.

Been using my wife's Keruig. Not as cheap or fresh, but good, less than *bucks, and cleanup is great.

As for coffee. This brand is pretty good. We had it at a small bed and breakfast. I see it at the fresh grind isle at HEB. Independence Coffee Company | Coffee & Tea... Revisited | Washington, Texas | Independence Coffee Company they have pre-ground bags also.

Dunkin's coffee is awesome in the NE, not the same here. BTW, this includes your blue state.

You can buy the beans in the bulk coffee isle. HEB and central markets sell the beans.

I got all you ladies beat. Local roaster Colorado Coffee Merchants, sold under the Umpire Estate label. Best I've ever had. I ship it to my sister overseas. Drinking a cup of Guatemalan right now. They are picky as hell about beans, won't carry specific varietals unless the beans are up to snuff, and the only decaf roast I have ever thought was good (if that matters to you).

Edit: They date the bags according to when the beans were roasted. Never seen/bought one more than 5 days old, keep it frozen and it's as good as fresh for a couple of weeks.

you're funny coming here to ask about coffee.

start with this: Home Coffee Roasting Supplies - Sweet Maria's

Peet's can be good if you get the right one. I converted my work to get shipped Peet's on a regular basis and it's pretty awesome. You can buy online. We've narrowed down our faves to Espresso Forte and Italian Roast but if you like it FUNKY you can try some of the more African stuff.

Do you even know what you like? Do you like funky south American beans or meaty robust African beans or what?

lol, I take coffee seriously. If I didn't need another set of 6ULs so bad I'd get one of those roasters.

Same here. Local roaster who sells under the name BeanFruit Coffee. Each bag is stamped with the roast date. Grind it fresh before I make a cup, can't beat it.

Doesn't hurt that the guys delivers direct to our store every week with fresh bags, and loves to stand around and explain each new bean. Oh, and the 40% discount is pretty nice, too.

+1 on finding a local roaster. Any decent-sized town will have several. Where I work, we get ours from a company located just a few doors down in the same office park.
