FWIW, since you have a documment showing the sale and the purchase conditions, which it sounds like you do, you can still take the guy that sold it to you to small claims court and win based on that document in most states. Even if it's had written on paper, as long as it's clear that he is selling you the car for X amount, you could recoup the money from the seller, even if it turn out it's not his car. Problem is if you are like me, that's a lot of hassles for a $400 hunk of junk. I'd take bens advice and contact the DMV and see if they can tell you what your options are.

I may have come up with an option. It is probably illegal but I am kind of always skating around the law. I do have a title from a '92 Miata that I totaled and sold for scrap. If they require a title to register this trailer I might just use that one. I am not sure if the scrap company recorded/reported the VIN# for the wrecked Miata. Hmmm, I guess a carfax search might tell me. Hopefully it won't come to that but I could go down that road.

well, just say you scraped the chassis, saved some parts for a trailer build...voila!

borrowing vin numbers is something Cobra guys do all the time....they find one that's been in a wrecking yard, and register their new kit car with the vin number and get antique plates.
i forgot you need a title for a perm tailor. i say simply use the title you have on the 92, hell do trailers even have vins? |

He said his dad would have to get the title to me sometime. No big deal since I was going to cut the car in half anyway and knew I would not need the title. why not just file for a abondonment title, mechanic shops do it all the time when someone doesnt pay their bill, if the car is left for a certain amout of time its considered abandoned.

You are not registaring a car. You can buy a body clip without a title from a junk yard. Stop thinking car and think trailor. I WOULD NOT MENTION A CAR AT ALL !!!!!!
Just try to registar a home built trailor. And they should supply you a VIN and title. Here in Texas you can steal a new trailor off the lot. Weld the vin. grind it and call it a new home built and never get caught. I know they have stole two trailors from me! And I have bought four trailors without titles and got them. But it is different from state to state. Look up home built trailors on you state web site. Once you have a tilte in hand they will never ask anymore questions. All the police look for, is that it is in the system. |
The info about titles, vin numbers, etc is coming from the state. I would not make this stuff up. When I called the DMV they gave me a list of 9 items that I needed (forms, titles, vins, etc). They even go so far as wanting a list of all items that I purchased to build the trailer. You guys are assuming that any of this would make sense, here in SC is most definitely does not.

Why not register it in Maine? Not affiliated in any way with them, just read that it's easy/cheap to register trailers in Maine and posted the first link Google gave me. |
