Porsche V8...but...kind of....weird.

I was going to put this in the Craiglist thread but thought it deserved its own discussion. I've been looking at Porsche V8 conversions on Craigslist, and came across...this:

Porsche Hybrid V8 - $4450 (Troy)

1988 Porsche 924S with 2003 5.3l LS1 with 60,000 miles, automatic, clean, fast and fun! call Jim at 248-459-8987
I don't even know how to feel about it. 4 grand for a Porsche with an LS1 in it? Yes please. Then you think about the automatic. And then...you look at the pics.

Seriously? What looks like a good body with decent paint, fairly clean interior....and a ratrod dragster hole cut in the hood.

But...it's 4 grand.

But........you'd have to drive around with the top of your engine sticking out for everyone to see.

But...oh hell, I can't make sense of it. I do know that if it was local, I'd be going over today to look at it.

Oh, god no.

The whole engine looks like it's in front of the shock towers, not to mention as high as your face.

Do not want.

I'd hit it.

icky

I never want to touch an automatic 'sports' car. This is not cool at all. But I know a guy that swapped v8's into 911's a few years ago.

it's worth more pulled apart. id buy it

UrbanSoot 03-28-2010 05:05 PM

id buy it and part it out and then use the money to build one properly.

rleete 03-28-2010 06:43 PM

Sorry, that hole in the hood kills it for me. Doesn't matter how fast it is or how well it handles, it's still a hack job.

You have to drive it. If you like how it drives with the AT tranny and the weight balance you can always put a hot rod scoop over the motor. A $50 Summit Racing part would do that a whole lot of good visually.

That'd be one hell of a scoop, you see how far that thing sticks out of the hood?

If it's a 5.3L it's a truck block.. :td:

It's probably just an iron Vortec 5300, I think the only aluminum one was the L33? It came in 4WD-model Silverados/Sierras.

Getting it registered/smogged legitimately could be pretty difficult to impossible if you have CARB rules where you live.

Could be a reason it's so cheap.

Find yourself a 928, they came from Stuttgart with V8s in them factory..

Front Engine / Rear Drive on a GT style car sucks IMHO, but whatever..

Sparetire 03-28-2010 09:48 PM

5.3L truck engine is not an LS1. -50 for typical CL bullshit. Its almost the same (the 5.3 heads are actually a bit better oddly enough) but its usually an iron block and it runs the same stoke with a smaller bore. If you want a bomb-proff FI engine you could bore it tout to about 370 cubes and turbo it and it would be awesome. The AL blocks were from the LH6, the L33, the LC9, and one other I think. Theres a darnm good wiki on it. Just look up Vortec.

An engine up high wont be too bad for drag racing, which with a auto of that type might be what it is for. The weight will transfer to the rears well with a high engine. Farther back would be nice though.

No thanks.
