Default Bad idea to piece together a turbo???

If you can get a good CHRA, compressor, and turbine housing separately. IS there any reason not to do this and just buy the hardware (bolts, seals, backing plate) from ATP?

I've got a line on a 2860rs for $275, but it's missing the backing plate, bolts, and seals to put it all together. Parts would be an extra $100 through ATP.

If it's easy to put together, then it seems like it would be worth $375

I don't see any reason not to, but I'm no expert on turbochargers. Backing plates and hardware don't seem like critical items that would _have_ to match, plus you'd change out some of that if you did a compressor upgrade anyway. Sounds like a sweet deal for a BB trubo!

People replace the compressor and exhaust housings all the time, I don't see why buying them separately would be any different.

The question becomes how cheaply you can get the housings. ScottFW might have a spare housing.

its like an AR-15, you have to source the quality and measurements, but there if done right, its definitely profit

It's not bad, I built a few hybrids for my FC when I had it, never had any problems with any of them. In fact, one I bought different wheels, housings and CHRAs just to experiment with and found a local diesel shop that rebuilt, assembled and balanced it for $50. It can be a pretty good deal and it's not hard at all especially if you're just changing the housings.

Well I just won the auction, and am about to purchase the hold down hardware from ATP. I'll have a complete 2860rs for $350. Hopefully it doesn't explode.

It was either this or a godspeed 3076. After running a 2870 churbo and making 280hp at 19psi I felt that the increase in efficiency couldn't hurt. Plus it will spool faster.

I don't think I'll give up anything to the churbo. If I go bigger later on, it will probably be with a 3071.

I saw a thread the warned against upgrading a compressor wheel because the chra will need to be rebalanced. Depending on the balancing cost, it could be cost effective to upgrade to a 2871. Just a thought.

Nothing really. I think that a quicker spooling turbo will be more suited to barber motorsports park. I only go to that one track and I find the spool to be a little too slow on the churbo. It's probably me not doing my part to keep the rpms up.

The 2870 put down the power (280+), but it was at 19psi. I'm hoping to put down a little more power, but have it come on sooner. I don't think I will see huge power gains, which could be disappointing. The turbo is still solid, zero shaft play, etc.

I also think the 2860 could be a little more fun around town. I've read that it's efficient until almost 24psi. I'm curious what the numbers will be with my setup.
