I remember playing Sonic on SEGA Genesis and loved it. I bet my uncle still has that somewhere.

I bought sonic4 last night. It's 5 zones, 3 acts in each. Just about as long as a Genesis Sonic. Definitely a LOT easier though especially towards the end. The older Sonics got harder the last 2 or 3 zones. I got to Robotnik's final form and kept dying. For an hour I tried, I can't beat him. Overall game is about an hour long. Worth $10 not quite $15. Good to see Sonic in 2D again though.

You inspired me to get the demo. What is bullshit is that the star flower pot thingies wont open up a special stage with 50 or 100 rings.

Yeah, I was really kind of sad when the original series drifted away from being a simple platformer, and wound up devolving slowly into some kind of Super Mario 64 ripoff. And that 2006 release- Sonic meets WoW?

Just played the demo, and I'm definitely going to buy it...

... just as soon as I figure out how this Xbox points thing works. I thought that the 550 or so achievement points that I'd racked up since getting this machine in 2007 were the currency of the system. Now I have no idea what they're for.

The controls do feel a bit different from what I remember. Sluggish maybe? Seems like when he's airborne, Sonic doesn't respond to left-right inputs very much. Hard to put my finger on.

And yeah, the graphics are very pretty and the sound is modern, but the essential gameplay element is very much intact. A four-way directional control, one action button, and that's it. They could have really fucked it up by assigning all sorts of different special functions to each one of the seventeen thousand buttons on the controller, but they didn't.

It's Microsoft points and gamer points. The higher your gamer points, the more of a nerd you are with no life. I'm up in the 3000s. Microsoft points cost real money. If you do the math, most of the "deals" aren't really deals. It's always about $1 for 80ish points. See, I'm young and hip and in the know.

P.S. The gamer points are earned through game specific achievements. Most give 20ish for finishing a level, more if it's at the highest difficulty. Then theres the more specific ones, like forza, which gives you 10ish for going 200mph for the first time.

ZOMG, Rick Dangerous was freaking amazing!

I could never get my hokey copy of Gods to work properly so never really played it.

So, the gamer points are essentially worthless? Then why bother having them? And here I thought all this time that I'd someday find something small but useful to do with them...

Yeah, a little. But you gotta remember, Sonic is 19 years old now- he's already outlived the average hedgehog by more than a factor of 2, so I think he's entitled to take it easy a little bit. Still a hell of a lot more spry than that creepy old Italian plumber who hangs out around elementary schools.

Actually, I figured it out. Or at least, my own perceptions of it. Back in 2004, the Sonic Mega Collection was released. This was a disc that contained exact emulations of all of the original titles, including the weird stuff like Spinball and Bean Machine. And I mean exact emulations, glitches and all- they even included the versions that were ports for the Game Gear and the SMS.

I immediately went out and bought a PS2.

Anyway... Go back and play the Genesis version of Sonic 3. Then play the original Sonic the Hedgehog. That's kind of what this feels like.

Funny thought just occurred to me. The Miata is a momentum car- gotta keep the speed up through the corners 'cuz it takes a while to get going again.

Sonic is now a momentum hedgehog.

I first played Sonic 1 on the Master System and then Sonic 2 on the Game Gear. Yup, time passes by quite fast.

I have had the Emerald Zone music from Sonic 2 stuck in my head all day because of this thread.

No, not worthless. Like I said, if your nerd status is important to you, so are your gamer points.
