Questions regarding selling/shipping a car out of state
 

I listed my dad's 1957 Thunderbird and sold it 8 days later. The auction only ended for $21,100 and the reserve was $30,000, but the guy and I did a little back and forth afterwards and we settled at $27,000 (not including shipping).

The couple that bought it were going to fly out here and drive it back, but considering the car is 54 years old I highly advised that they didnt and he agreed to just have it shipped.

My questions are concerning the title/registration/bill of sale/etc. This is my first out of state motor vehicle sale, so I'm not exactly sure what it entails. I know a handful of you guys have already "been there done that", so I figured I'd ask.

I have until sometime next week to sort everything out before setting up the shipping. Looks like its going to cost roughly $2000 for an enclosed trailer from CT to UT, door to door.

I think beyond signing over the title and signing whatever release of liability type of forms CT has, there aint much to do. There's probably a FAQ on the state dmv site. For both states just in case?

It's a shame you didn't sell it two weeks ago. My friend could have pulled it from Lime Rock to Miller for you with a spare spot in the trailer.

My experience with having purchased a car from an out-of-state seller (I was in Florida at the time) was fairly simple.

The seller provided a hand-written bill of sale, and signed over the out-of-state title just as one normally would for a same-state transaction. The only extra step was that once the car was in my possession, I had to have a Sheriff's deputy come over and inspect the car, basically just to witness the VIN and punch it into the computer to verify that the car was not stolen or otherwise flagged. Once that was done, transfer of title and registration proceeded as normal.

Really? Damn, that would have worked nicely. Your buddy could have made some extra cash just for going home. lol

I sold my Porsche to a guy in Kansas on eBay a few years back (I was in New Orleans). He sent a truck for it. I gave a bill of sale to the truck driver, form from the internet stating my release of interest in the car ect. and mailed the signed title to the new owner (registered mail). all went butter smooth.

I have bought several cars and bikes from out of state.

The way I did it everytime was, I asked the seller for the bank he holds a checking account with. If it was Chase bank, or any other bank that is around here. I would just walk in and directly deposit the full payment in there account, at least this way there is no paypal fee or anything like that. One time I did it with Walmart money transer.

But not before calling the truck driver who was picking up the car and have them hold the title. The driver would hold the title while the money appears in the sellers account, then they let him load up the car/bike.

The few people that insisted on a bill of sale, they faxed it over, I had i signed it while having it notarized and faxed it back.

I've bought/sold cars out of state as well and it's really no different. When I sold my '99 to a guy from Maryland, he showed up with a check from the Navy Credit Union and we signed the BoS and sent him on his way. In that case, I did have a lein on the car and used the money to pay it off, release the title and send it to him. Poor guy though, must have thought I was scamming him because my credit union goofed on sending me the title and it went AWOL (a rare thing for them to screw up) so I had to ride the CU a bit to get me another title. Go figure 2 days after I get the expedited title and send it to the buyer...the original one shows up in the mail lol. I also bought my 02' from out of state and it was no problem.

I looked up the bill of sale for CT on our DMV site and found a form that I can just fill out online and print.

Not only is this my first out of state motor vehicle sale, but this is my first classic car sale. Now I can get the word around that I can handle shit like this and maybe find another couple cars to sell a year.

This week I have 2 trailers I have to list. One is a 28' aluminum East dump trailer and the other is a 35ton Rodgers low boy. I dont think I'll be able to ship these things though. lol

So after talking to close to a dozen different car carriers I started off at $2000 and now I'm down to $1295 (door to door, enclosed trailer, fully insured)!

Now I just need to pick between the 2 best choices and looks like I'll be having the car picked up on July 5th next week.

The buyers are going to overnight the certified check either today or tomorrow.

So far so good! :)

The money was wired on Tuesday and the car just left here an hour ago.

I spent almost 4 hours down at the detail shop cleaning it today. Then the fucking huge rig showed up to get it.

Now I dont have to worry about my schedule as much from here on out, but I doubt I'll sleep well until the guy gets it and says everything is A-OK.

I wasn't even aware there was a special procedure for it. Both of my cars were bought from VA and techincally I live in MD. Sign the title and off you go. Shit, they don't even have to sign it. Just gimme.
