Interesting....

It is a little short @ 30" (probably only using it while sitting down though) I think it turned out fine. I found a driveshaft today while cleaning out my junkyard but I am still happy I used the camshaft. I think it looks cool.

My father bought an oven and a few powdercoat supplies the other day. I figure he is looking for something to play with so I might give it to him to practice on. I don't know if making it pretty and black will detract from the looks though.

cool lil ashtray.

Shoulda had the rotors machined and hit the tophats with an abrasive disc grinder first. Give it that brushed metal look. :)

If there was a 'like' button I would be pressing it now.

mgeoffriau 10-09-2011 06:24 PM

Heh, I've got all those parts laying around too. Well, I'd have to open up the spare 1.6l I've got to do it.

Nice job.

I've been digging the rusty look but it wouldn't look horrible to give it a brushed look and then clear coat it. Hmmm.....

Edit: I used the word "look" three times in that sentence. I hate when people do that so...

I've been digging the rusty finish on the rotors but it would be interesting to see it "brushed" and then clear coated.

any plating shops that could do a quick chrome job on it?

rmcelwee 10-09-2011 09:04 PM

I'm not sure where the plating shops are around here. I would think we have one but I have no idea where it is.

In your opinion, would it look better in chrome or does that take something away from it?

gearhead_318 10-09-2011 09:05 PM

I'd dip the rusty parts in something acidic/corrosive for a while and do a brushed steel kinda thing.

rmcelwee 10-09-2011 10:20 PM

Could do some electrolysis and turn them black. I built a rig to do that a while back:

The above video was mine but here is a good explanation:

Chrome spray paint?

IMHO it's a waste of time. Might as well keep it looking like the inside of your lungs.

rmcelwee 10-10-2011 12:47 AM

Lungs are fine (from the cigars) - I don't inhale. However, I work in a chemical plant and probably won't make it much past 50 years old...

y8s 10-10-2011 12:18 PM

I might be biased but i think chrome would look sweet.

biased because dad owned a plating shop for many years and chrome shit was easily had.
