Quick question regarding spark
My bro's 97 camry died while driving and it won't start. Its cranking but not starting.
I checked spark and can smell fuel. Will you still get spark on a bad alternator? (The belt is torn in a couple places, but still spinning the alternator and no squealing) |
Check the timing belt.

Is the fuel smell coming from the ground under the car? Will you still get spark on a bad alternator? A bad alternator, however, will have zero effect on the ability of the ignition system to make spark during cranking. The alternator doesn't do anything until the engine is up and running at idle speed. |

Yah thats what I'm guessing too. Camry is non interference engine, so it should be ok.
Oh yes there was spark. |

Pull oil cap. Look for cam spinning.

So where do you guys buy OEM Toyota parts?

If he has a 2.2 4 cylinder camry, then its a distributor system, and its driven by the cam, which mean timing belt is broke cam doesnt spin therefore no spark at plug. But most of the time when a tbelt fails you only loose a few teeth at first, then when it gets off time your getting spark at the wrong time, but still getting spark.
If it is a 6 I do believe it is coil on plug and I dont know what commands the coils and Im way too lazy to check. More info please. |
