The stock motor in that I car is beyond superior to the 5.0. The 5.0 will also never make the torque that a turbo M20 can make (stock for stock)

MS2
ebay manifold
Holset HX35
used mustang injectors

easy 300-400whp on a bone *** stock motor with more torque than your kidneys can handle.

My other friend (yes, all my car friends have E30's. I am the queer miata driver of the group ) did the combination above and I am tuning it now.
He just broke the $5,000 mark and that includes the car, the motor from my other E30 friend (broken record), turbo, i/c, etc... beefy new clutch and a spare parts car.

Pics for this thread with some fun cliffs.

The 2.7 M20 in the car I am tuning (I head, E bottom)

Most the wiring finished. Just a basic MS2. Fun fact: the downpipe is made from a few pieces of a Greddy 3" turbo back for a GSX. It was given as payment from a friend and we hacked the Greddy downpipe in pieces using eyeball measurements, taped it together and had a local guy TIG it based on our magic marker lines we drew Came out perfect, sold the turbo back for 300 - free downpipe

And here is the parts car we went and picked up.

After about 2 hours of wrenching and a little ingenuity.........

Yes, you are seeing what you think you see. It drove 35 miles from Key West for Big Pine

Moral of the story. I have too much time on my hands and you should do whatever you want because I forgot what the topic of conversation was.

That's simple, man! Best friend just picked up a legit rust free E36 roller for $450.00, even had good paint and a pretty nice interior. Gen III 5.3 motors can be found in generic salvage pick-n-pull yards now and a complete motor can be had for under $200.00, yank it yourself. I've seen on CL locally 5.3's complete with harness and ECU sell (people I know) for ~$300. T56's are still ENORMOUSLY high cost, but there are other much stronger transmissions out there available for a little more if you were inclined.

Turbo it.

...

Major profit!

Again, I reference:

The old 302 can make over 400hp with just heads and high ratio rockers. Stock CR, stock cam.

Not that I dont like the idea of the big turbo 4, but a SBF is nothing to shrug off.

That motor is overbuilt too.

It doesnt take a RHS block, MAST heads, and an ITB setup to make 700hp N/A.

There are guys doing it on GM blocks with a stock style intake and GM or TFS heads, and even keeping the hydraulic roller.

Step it up to a solid roller and you can make even more.

Last LSx swap we did. Did cammed LS1 and T56 and some 4:56s. She boogies from a dig for a truck. Has about the nastiest street T56 you can build.

Well you should drive down the street and tell him about it. Endyn is in DFW, and I'm sure Larry would love to have your input on his parts selection.

Scanner is actually pretty good in color. It has a pretty high resolution (1200dpi) and the color representation seems pretty close. I did have my first problem after I posted. I was manually feeding an envelope and it said paper jam. I think I just didn't insert the envelope far enough as I went through the steps to make it shut up and it worked fine.

+1.. I don't spend a significant amount of time researching LSx builds, but I've yet to see even ONE 500+hp NA LS motor, especially on stock induction..

Yeah. My cousin with I think an LS2? From a WS6 Trans Am was pretty heavily built n/a, and to the other mullet wearing guys, his power was pretty impressive. He was only making mid 400's. I just can't imagine 700hp+ on a n/a LSx. I require proof.

Crap...I'm now discussing trades with the E30 owner.

Then I looked up M20 heads on eBay.

Sooo...if I dropped, say $450 (or equivalent trade value) on the E30, then $385 on an ebay head if I couldn't find one locally...

A straight, rust-free, running 1989 325i for under $850?

And then I could drive it around while deciding whether to swap in a manual and do a turbo build, or swap in something else.

Do yourself a big favor and make sure you get a 325i or 325is. You get the better cylinder head, the sport suspension, better rear end gearing and, imo, the best starting platform.

Then if you wanted to do a 2.7, all you would need is the E bottom end (which can be had for cheap) and you could reuse your I head.

I think that might be hard to find for that price. The E30 is like the new miata; lots of people want them and are racing them. The demand is higher for clean, running cars. However, also like the miata, I wouldn't be afraid to buy a non-running car if I was sure I was going to dig into the motor for a possible swap.

It's your call, though.
