Stopping systems are great, until you meet the person behind you that doesnt have them...

Fortunately, the law in most states allows us to collect from drivers behind us whose following distance is less than the delta of their stopping distance to ours.

In Virginia, of course, i assume that police brutality somehow interferes with this.

youre half correct on both statements.

VA is a "Pure Contributory Negligence" state. in most cases people that run into you are at fault and will have to pay for damages. Problem is, as soon as that driver says, "his actions caused me to hit him" he is no longer at fault and his insurance wont necessarily pay. Or in my case when I get rear end from someone who doesnt stop at stop signs, all he has to say is "He reversed into me" and his insurance will not pay for your damages. Most bad drivers around here know this and use this play, so they get out of their insurance having to pay for all the damage they cause.

And yes, the police are to blame here too.

Police in this area will not write an accident report unless the total damages are estimated to cost around $2,500. This is policy--call fairfax county police and ask. Whenever you call your insurance company and report an accident, they want a police report to show fault. Whenever you get in an accident and call police, they want you to deal with your insurance. Police here absolutely refuse to get involved in police matters; there is no money for the state here.

There are in rare occurrences some cops that may take pity on you and actually ticket the driver for "unsafe driving" if he hits you, but it depends and it's rare.

In my case, when the 50-year-old man-baby cries to the cop that "i was sticking out too far and after waiting over two minutes behind me I reversed into him, so hard that it caused my own bumper to crack in half and crinkle the license plate." that he couldn't write a ticket because he believed the story. Even when I was able to refute everything about his story AND point out the guys short skid mark.

His insurance refused to pay because their driver claims it was my own fault that he hit me. And without a police report that says "yes, this **** was to blame." there's nothing I could do. This man-child caused around $1000 in damages to my property due to negligence and lack of brain and was able to get away with it because of insurance has no interest in providing the service they are designed for and the shitty police that have no interest in providing the service they are designed for.

Your hateful and derisive attitude towards all manifestations of law enforcement and civil authority suddenly makes sense to me.

I've long suspected that there had to be some kind of personal history here, though I'd generally assumed that it was something along the lines of "a rogue cop killed my parents as they were volunteering at a shelter for homeless, orphaned kittens." Somehow "I got tapped from behind by some random guy at a stoplight and had to repair my car's bumper" doesn't quite convey the same gravitas.

I'm kind of curious to know what would happen if something actually bad ever happened to you...

you mean like that one time the feds illegally searched our house and took personal property without a warrant all while denying us a lawyer and refusing to leave and the case was ultimately dropped in court due to the civil rights violations and lack of any evidence due to the illegal search but not after a costly lawyer fee defending ourselves in court with no compensation for their crimes and damage to our property?

but things like that dont really happen.

I was at a party the other day, in the home of an arlington county police officer and about 10 others from his department. no one died. they even had a dog, that was living...

I like to mow different patterns in my lawn. im not cool.

oh btw, saturday morning i was looking out my back window deciding if i should go outside and take pictures of birds or not.

I saw a blue jay flapping around like it was injured. I was about to go out and see if I could help when a fox jumped on it, picked it up in its mouth, and walked away with it.

If someone runs a red light and T-bones you, totaling your car and sending you to the hospital, his insurance company literally doesn't owe you a dime, regardless of if 12 people and a traffic cam all caught it on camera, the guy admitted fault, and it all happened in front of a police officer who wrote a traffic citation.
