I've never quite understood this.

The current path for the welding process is entirely between the welding tip and the ground clamp. The vehicle's electrical system shouldn't be part of the path, and even if the current path winds up traversing a chassis ground cable (eg: if you're welding on the exhaust, which is electrically connected only to the head, but your clamp is on the chassis for some reason), this still isn't going to involve the path through the battery.

Yes, there's going to be all sorts of EMI and RFI thrown off while the arc is active, but again, the EE part of my brain can't fathom any way in which the battery being connected is going to have any effect on anything.

(Pretty sure this one's photoshopped.)

Anyone ever see "long way around"?

Its hard to find a BMW GS1200 ECU in mongolia

edit- I am off the opinion it had little to do with the battery being connected or not. Im guessing the ground system just couldn't dissipate all the EMF, or they connected the ground clamp where they shouldn't have.

I wonder how many of those "look, I have an oil cooler screwed to the front bumper of my car, with long, unsupported rubber hoses leading back into the engine compartment" setups are actually connected to the engine's oil system.

Wouldn't you want to run the lines to a sandwich plate with thermostat on the oil filter / passenger side of the engine? In that picture, it looks as if the lines are going somewhere but there. Also, engine oil is practically the life blood of an engine. An external front mount oil cooler is like taking your heart out of your body and using zip ties to hold it around your neck.

I was going to find an external heart picture but decided against, even though this picture is just as gruesome.

It's a popular trend amongst the "classic JDM" crowd, both in Japan and elsewhere. Part of of bōsōzoku fad which brought us rusty hoods, stretched anuses tires, stance, and excessive negative camber.

Basically the automotive equivalent of having a ***** tattooed on your forehead.
