RC Cars

Any one into them? I used to race dirt, oval, and road course. I was definately way to serious with the hobby. Now it all sits in a closet gathering dust. I think it is time to sell this crap off. I wonder if there is any intrest in it any more.

It got too big. When you went to race, it got so whomever spent the most money (all else being equal) was the winner. Like nascar no longer being about stock cars, R/C got to be big bucks, and the fun was lost.

I have a nitro stadium truck I terrorize the neighborhood with. Fun.

No kidding I had $1000 invested in my gas car, just to get dusted by factory sponsored drivers. It is why I liked oval racing, the track provided a stock motor, and a 4 cell battery pack. Even though there were still lots of variables it eliminated cheater motors, and those special sponsor battery packs.

Me and a couple guys got some stock US sports last year. They weren't stock for too long, I am already on my 2nd engine :(

Also picked up a Inferno buggy this year from Ebay to use when my truggy gets broke - happens fairly frequently.

I ran an Associated RC10 back in the late 80's when they first came out. Just did the indoor stuff. Sold it to buy a gas car that never ran worth a shit so there it sits 20 years later. I don't even remember what it is.

Never really got into the r/c cars as much as I did r/c aviation. Had a few starter planes and helicopters. Quit because of costs after some dumbass destroyed my MD500 helicopter 2 weeks after I got it by interfering with my frequency somehow. Almost 2' long with a similar rotor diameter. Lots of fun. I'm going to get another one someday.

I have had planes and helis too. I always liked building the planes more than flying them. I had a Century Hawk Heli, and I too lost a good portion of it too an idiot. At least the local club banned him for a month from the field.

RotorNutFD3S 03-09-2009 03:43 PM

Yeah, this guy got permabanned from this field, apparently not his first time causing problems.
Nice helicopter! I had a Century Robinson22 that I sold for the MD500. I got it because that was the first helicopter I logged 1:1 scale training hours in. :)
I always wanted one of their Airwolf replicas (based on Hawk mechanics). Damn it, now you got me shopping for another one. lol

LOL I had the Bell 777 replica kit. I built it, put the retracts in it, and a nice OS engine. Was always too scared to fly it. I sold both Helis with Futuba 8 ch for around $300.

kotomile 03-09-2009 08:12 PM

I had a little HPI Nitro car, tons of fun. I put a JGTC MR2 body on it and gave it a 2-speed swap. I think it's still in my parents' garage.

+1

I used to race every weekend in my teenage years, this was in the mid/late 1980s .... eventually got frustrated because I couldn't keep up with the big-money adults. Couple of local tracks eventually started truly "stock" groups (they supply cars with tamper marks, same electronics, etc.), but that class was slow and boring.

Then I turned 16 and got interested in real cars, girls, planning for college, etc. :)

There is probably a box somewhere at my parent's house, full of Tamiya parts, chassis carcasses, etc.

UrbanSoot 03-09-2009 09:12 PM

i have $500 rc heli... does that count?

swimming108 03-10-2009 01:34 AM

I race 1/10th scale 2wd and 4wd electric buggies. I am not very good at it, but i love the competitive nature of it. It also keeps my racing blood in check since i can't afford to race real cars yet.

mrpurplepenguin 03-10-2009 01:57 AM

I never got into cars. I started with planes, moved on to helis, got out of it for a few years and picked it up again about 2 years ago. I also had a Century Hawk, learned to fly on that thing. Now I have a Trex 450, a 500, and I'm looking at either a 600 nitro or a Vibe 50. Gotta love what lipos and brushless motors have done for these hobbies...

I still have my Inferno DX. It was actually a gift from my granny when I was 17 (she was a cool granny). Still run it from time to time but never bothered to joined a club. It is most fun in the snow, actually!

rleete 03-10-2009 11:58 AM

Well, since it's already strayed from just cars...

I have 3 planes. One is a .049 powered Pietenpaul, and 2 .040 powered trainers. Only the .049 has flown, the other two aren't even finished. The .040 Supertiger engines are new in the box, worth at least double what I paid for them so long ago. I also have a car called the XR-311, which was a vehicle that FoMoCo submitted for bid back when the gov't was looking for a replacement for the Jeep. Sold off a couple more Tamiya cars years ago; wish I'd kept them now.

The crown jewel is a 1/16 Tamiya King Tiger (the thing is huge) that I modified from the crappy 2 speed selector to a variable speed control. It ended up with transmission problems (how's that for historical accuracy?), and had to be modified. None of the stuff has been run in years, and I'm sure the battery packs are long dead.

I have quite the collection of RC stuff. I think about selling it every once in a while, but then I remember how expensive it is to get back into it. I consider it an investment.
