Default Rear mounted radiator

Anyone ever done this? Will stock water pump work or do you need supplemental one?

The only person I have seen do this in a miata is Brian from Fab9. I believe he documented how he did it in his build thread.

I would guess for the abomination him and his daughter are building. I highly doubt it has anything to do with real heat control.

Exactly.


And think I be cool to see a Miata Kart with just a spinning belt and pulley on the front, very max max ish. Frame rails will end where sway bar mounts. I'll be cutting back right back to the fuel tank so I figure Id hang it back there.

Off road car experience here. Rear mount radiators only work OK with a big electric pump. moving water 30 feet and vetically 3 feet, was something a stock pump was never meant to do. Also requires really well thought-out ducting for both entrance and exit, and fans. I have seen way more botched attempts than completed well working ones. Again, this was all in the dirt. You also now have 220 degree heaters running through the car.

With how hacked up the car would be I would imagine the ducting wouldn't actually be that difficult. you could fab up some side vents out of aluminum that extend from over the rear wheels or from over top of the driver like the old rally cars sometimes had.

Budget.
Fun build.
Toy.
Keep daughter interested in cars.
Teach her to drive a stick.

I have have had a bunch of strange **** come out of my driveway over the years. She has seen it all but was to young to build and drive, I hope to make this one as fun and different as the others.

This is a "Sloppy Mechanics" build. Thinking of using just fence post pipe running it down the rockers outside the car. This is a thought, nothing in stone.

Fence post pipe will corrode pretty badly. Ask me the poor college student I used to be how I he know knew.

If it makes it through 2017 I'd be very happy. We are talking a car with no provision for a top living outside. Got me some Kirkeys for seats and a few marine grade switches for a dash and let it eat.

The "woody" wagon was some 70's paneling out of a dumpster that I attached with 2lbs of drywall screws, only hit the fuel line once while "installing" the carpet. That was a fun build. Pulled that limo out of the woods of NJ after it sat for 11 years with a tractor, towed it home. Evicted the current residents (mice) and than packed a Keg in the trunk and drove it from Va Beach to NYC and than to New Orleans and back in a week with only minor issues(3300 miles). This included a trip down tail of the dragon where the brakes lit on fire. Wife loved when I picked her up from airport in it.

If you want to keep it cheap/simple, I would use the factory water pump, and make the hoses going to the rear larger diameter than stock so the water flowing through those long pipes slows down. That will reduce the pressure drop a lot, allowing you to get away with the stock water pump without significantly reducing the flowrate of the coolant. Like 50% increase in diameter over stock would probably be enough to make it work well. As for dumping heat, big fans, big radiator, because those fans are basically all you're gonna have without some fancy ducting. If you run the larger pipes you could just buy some cheap pickup truck radiator perhaps, something huge with large inlets/outlets anyway.
