I need to think about replacing my '96 Trooper this year after 150K troublefree miles and I hate to shop for anything, much less go car shopping.
I am looking for a new vehicle(read leftover 2008) with a lot of interior room for Grandkids or cargo(small engines and/or many boxes) that has decent towing capacity(5000 lbs). I want to stay away from the big three and would want something with no swing-up rear door to make it easy to move engines/transmissions in and out. Who makes one with the sliding rear roof access? Any suggestions or experience? |
01+ Trooper. :) I love troopers. Got a 99' and a 86'.

I know you said no "big3", but what about an Excursion diesel... still get about 16-17mpg not towing anything, will carry half your neighborhood, and tow your house if you need it.
HOLY SHIT! How did I miss rolling over 3000posts? |
4dr Tacoma pickup truck. Room for grandkids, check. Room for cargo, check. Over 5000lb towing capacity, check.

Also, they made a turbo diesel for the Trooper's in 99+ Very rare, but they're bad ass. I'm doing a turbo diesel swap in my 86' one day. (got the engine, just need to do the swap) Still, the 3.5 gas burner in the 99+ is not too bad either. 99+ got a redesigned drivetrain. They were pretty advanced for their time. I'd say their on par with any 08 big 3 easy.

Cool, but I need the cargo covered.

what about the "no swing up rear door" (gate?) part? Just about anything I can think of that will pull 5000lbs has a drop gate on the rear. The heavy duty vans from the big three have swing doors...
