Removing paint off wheel

1 Attachment(s)
The previous owner of my wheels painted them black and now the paint is starting to chip. I'd like to totally remove the paint, but I don't want to hurt the original finish on the wheel, so I'm not wanting to use aircraft stripper. I tried using mineral spirits (the low odor kind) but it didn't seem to have an effect, and since the car is my daily driver I'd like to make sure whatever method I use can be done quickly so I'm not driving around with 3 black wheels and 1 plan alloy.
Any ideas on what will work? I'm not getting them sand blasted.

The wheels I've got are the '99-2002 Sport 5-spoke alloy.

Thanks

I just fond some "Klean Strip" premium stripper in my garage that the previous owner must have left, and it stripped the paint within 15 minutes. Be VERY careful if you ever decide to use this stuff, it toke some of the tar off the driveway, srsly.

Did it retain the original finish? I now '90-'93 daises had a clear coat painted on, I would think anything that would destroy a top layer would visually destroy that OEM coat. Maybe the later ones are finished differently.

It removed a good percentage of the factory finish, it would come off depending on how long the stripper had been on and how hard I rubbed with the rag. If your wanting to retain the factory finish I would not recommend using the same stuff I did, it would make the paint bubble and even burn my hand if I came in contact with it.
If you want your wheels to be somewhere between the factory finish and chrome, the stripper liberally + fine wet sanding and/or polishing would do the trick. Personally I like having black wheels so I'm going to put on a few coats of Plasti dip.

im probibly wrong, but if someone painted them they should have sanded the original finish off / back enough that its already stuffed ?

You're assuming everyone takes the time to do quality work. That's a huge mistake.

I have a set of 6ULs I need to strip the nickel finish off... wonder if this stuff will work for that.

I'd think it would. Your going to need something kinda rough to scrub with as well.

It looks like who ever did it just painted directly onto the wheel.

Has anyone tried putting spray enamel over several coats of plasti dip? I'm trying to make sure it stays looking good.
