This is one of the nicest roads to drive in a Miata.

Rock slide closes Vancouver to Whistler route.

A cliff has collapsed onto the Sea to Sky Highway, closing the route between Vancouver and Whistler for at least 24 hours.

The RCMP say a massive rock face fell onto the road about half a kilometre north of Porteau Cove between Furry Creek and Lions Bay just before midnight.

The route, Highway 99, and an adjacent railway, were buried under an estimated 16,000 cubic metres of rocks, some the size of trucks, according to initial police reports.

The RCMP aren't sure whether anyone was buried under the rock —which is more than 10 metres deep and 100 metres long by some estimates.

There has been no official word on the cause of the slide, but geotechnical experts were on the site Wednesday morning.

The highway has been undergoing extensive widening and upgrading at a cost of $600 million in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, but an official with the Transportation Ministry said there was no construction underway in the immediate area of the slide.

It is not clear when the highway will reopen. The RCMP initially said it will be closed for at least 24 hours, but work crews in the area have told CBC News that it could take at least two days to clear the site because blasting would likely be required to clear the massive rocks on the road.

South of the slide, traffic heading north from Vancouver was being turned around at the Eagleridge intersection near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, but residents of Lions Bay were being allowed through. North of the slide, local traffic was being allowed south as far as Furry Creek.

To reach Whistler from Vancouver, drivers will have a long detour east on the Trans-Canada Highway to Lytton, then north on Highway 12 to Lillooet, and then south on Highway 99 through Pemberton to Whistler.

In February 2007, the highway was closed for seven hours by a rock slide just north of Horseshoe Bay.

16,000 cubic meters is equal to 517,000 cubic feet

Boulders are the size of semi's

They better get their shit together if they don't want any deaths during the olympics.

The S2S highway is gotta be the most deadliest road in western Canada.

.....the olympics is the biggest waste of money in the history of B.C.
