Have a clogged drain in my basement.

Girlfriend suggested we buy the product with the simplest packaging.

Came home with a product called 'rooto'. Googling tells me that this shit is 90%+ sulfuric acid.

Which would explain why my whole fucking house now reeks like rotten fucking eggs.

And it didn't even clear out the drain.

What was her rationale for buying the one with the simplest packaging?

Least flashy = not intended for consumers.

A real plumber doesn't go out and buy 'liquid plumr', he goes out and buys <some crazy shit> in a generic-looking package. I was totally on board with this, makes perfect sense to me.

And I've gotta say, 64oz of sulfuric acid, in principle, seems like it'd be a pretty badass drain cleaner.

I've always used hot water in a bucket. Dump it directly into the hole. Do it a couple of times.

Use the correct toilet plunger, not a sink plunger.

What kind of drain is this? Liquid Fire drain cleaner has worked well in the past, which is also a Sulfuric acid cleaner. I think the fact that the sulfuric acid heats up is what does most of the work, which is why I would try what Kenzo said. If it doesn't work, your out what? Some water and what ever you used to heat it to near boiling point.

Thats a good tip. My 20+ year old drains are becoming easier and easier to clog up with big dumps. The kind that make your pants fit far too loose when your done. Sometimes I do the 2 flusher to avoid forcing too much into the system at once.

This is the drain for my basement sink. If someone is shitting in my sink, I have bigger problems with a clogged drain.

The drain pipes for every sink/tub/toilet in my house collect at a central point and through a single large pipe. Except this one; this drain pipe goes into the floor on the opposite side of the house (and then, I presume, is supposed to flow under the floor and over to that central pipe on the other side of the house).

Instead of doing that, though, the water is coming up out of a drain in the floor about a foot away from where the pipe goes in. And as of this morning, the the pooled water had (mostly) drained and the acid had cleaned things up enough that I could see into this drain and remove some chunks of rock that were plugging it up. How rocks got in my drain I have no f'n idea. But it explains why sulfuric acid wasn't enough to clean it out.

Will wait 'til the water subsides more, than try to see if there are more rocks (because it still isn't draining at a noticeable rate- something like 9 hours to drop 4" in a 3" pipe).

That is clever. Kinda backfired a bit though - sometimes the hardcore stuff isn't meant for the consumer for a reason. :laugh: Has the smell cleared up yet?

The smell in the house has diminished a bit. Have had the windows open for the last 12-13 hours.

Still pretty bad in the basement, though, where there are no windows that open.

The last stubborn drain I had I used stuff called Bull Shot. I got it in Home depot. It's the only stuff on the shelf that where the bottle is in a thick plastic bag.

i just use straight bleach.

Also it useful to atleast once a month pour some bleach down all the drains in the house.
