No cable for 4 months... AMEN!
Here's the thread from back in August that started this... turned from a "Help me kill cable" thread to a "life on the ship" and "how a TV station works" thread... I love this forum!

So we bought a Roku3 and a Mohu Antenna. We've haven't watched anything on the antenna, but it gets about a dozen stations, so local programming is there if I wanted it, like if there was some sort of national emergency of whatever.
The Roku, however, is straight up ****. Big, soft (yet firm), smooth, built for comfort and speed... awesome. In addition to having all the usual stuff, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc... it has a few hundred "other" channels to choose from. I'm not going to list them all, but I watch a few of the dedicated outdoor/hunting channels, the kids have a few (love the arts&crafts stuff), and the wife like the 2-dozen odd yoga/pilates/workout channels. There are tons more that I surf through occasionally just for shitz. And for all the bro's... there's at least 5 gay channels, including MSNBC.
The Roku is fast, video quality is very good, never has any faults or hangups, and the remote is VERY SIMPLE... which you never knew was so critical until you realize that your 4-yr old knows what all the buttons do and can surf Netflix and Amazon all by herself and navigate to the exact programs she wants.
I'll never go back to cable. I've learned that I enjoy watching a TV series over the course of a couple months vice a couple years. My wife did all of Lost in about 3 months, and we're coming up on the middle of SOA Season6... Breaking Bad is next.
The other thing getting rid of cable has done is more subtle, but I didn't really catch on until a buddy came over, sat down on the couch, and asked me where the remote was... "Dude, I got rid of cable"... the look on his face was pure bewilderment. We talked about how it was working out, and I realized that the TV is no longer a main focus in my life. The TV is there for when I specifically want it for something, and I still watch something every day, but I never realized how much I watched random useless **** "just because". For example, I will never again in my life be sitting on the couch and get sucked into an episode of "America's Dumbest Blah Blah" for an hour.
I'm 100% certain that anybody who gets rid of cable will never go back. Yup, giving up certain live sports will be a deal-killer for lots of dudes, but not for me. I'm not some new-age schmuck who says things like this lightly... but getting rid of cable has improved my life.

We only ever had cable when it was included in the rent for previous apartments, but we "ditched" cable by doing the following:
1. Roof-mounted antenna to get crystal clear HD local channels + Win7 HTPC for DVR
2. Roku3/Chromecast for various Netflix/Amazon Prime/etc streaming
That has offered us more than enough entertainment for the last few years. As you note, the only missing element was certain live sports. Some stuff was available...Sunday NFL, Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals. But other stuff was only available on crappy, illegal online streams, or with expensive streaming packages: regular MLB, early round NBA and MLB playoffs, other stuff I was interested in.
So, I signed up for Sling TV from Dish, which was just introduced a few weeks ago. It's $20 a month and you get access to 10 or 12 channels, but the big ones are ESPN and ESPN2, which previously have been only available through conventional cable/satellite service. But the kicker is that it's no-contract. I can activate my account for 2-3 months during baseball season and save a good bit over the $100+ that MLB.tv costs, then cut it back off until I need it again for say, college bowl season.

Its been 5-6 years since I've had any cable. DOING GREAT!
Most of entertainment for me/the gf are video streaming sites + Netflix. She's gotten more out of netflix than I ever will, but at least everything I watch is 'new' to me lol. If we cant find what we want on netflix, searching online is plan B. Found everything we've ever wanted to watch so far. I need to start hoarding DVDs though, I like the physical copy aspect.

I'm in the same boat, cut off cable about 9 months ago. I was surprised how much less time I spend in front of the TV. Netflix satisfies getting through some TV series that I missed before and general wasting time when I have it.
The only thing I do miss is NHL games but other than that, I don't miss the $100+ a month I'm not paying.

Windows Media Center has full DVR functions -- a full program schedule, record by program, manual record, pause/rewind/ff for live TV, etc. Works great. There's even a plug in that lets you set recordings, check the schedule, stream video etc. from any computer or Android device. Only issue is that it looks like MS is basically abandoning it. Works well now but may not have support in the future if it breaks.
There are other options, though. Hauppauge and a couple other companies make their own DVR software (Hauppauge includes theirs with the TV tuner card). And there are some popular linux-based setups like XBMC as well. If WMC breaks I'll be looking in that direction.

There's a thread here somewhere on my setup, but the short version is that I bought a $150 HP small form factor PC with Win7 Pro, added a $40 vidcard so I'd have HDMI output, a Hauppauge TV tuner card, and a 1 TB HD for storage.

I've picked up a few new Pi 2 boards. XBMC may be in the works!

This morning I brought our Mohu Antenna to the office. I'm on the 3rd floor of a 3-story bldg. and figured since we don't use it at home, I'd see how it does at work. I get about 40 channels, which is better than zero before since there's no cable connection in my office.
I also bought an Amazon Firestick for the office... I was looking for a cheap Miracast Dongle and it didn't make sense to spend $20 on a crappy Chinese one that ONLY does Miracast and may of may not work with my LG Volt vs. getting the Firestick for $40 that I know will work and does tons of other shiz.
The Miracast connection works on my Roku3 at home works like magic with my phone, so hopefully the Firestick does too. I don't think I need the streaming stuff the Firestick does (but can use my phone's hotspot if I want) because my phone has all the streaming apps I normally use, but again, it was only $40 and I feel very confident about the Miracast function.

I think you need cable to be able to access that.
You can always torrent the SkyF1 coverage or the BBC coverage of F1, its not live but I'm sure you DVR is normally anyways. The commentary on sky is literally a billion times better than NBC. For the races that you could conceivably watch live in the USA at a normal hour (canada, austin, monaco, sao paulo) they've been playing those on normal CBS and not CBSN, so you can get that with just an antenna. Or if you dont want to do that I found that 100% of the races were covered in non-live broadcasts on my local spanish station with spanish announcing. Whats amusing is that it looks like they produce it by recording the world stream of the race onto a VHS and then just playing it back with random dudes talking about the race who watched the race the first time it was run. I say VHS because occasionally they get what I could only describe as VHS tracking errors on the video feed.
