School me on domains/websites.

Ok, so I'm wanting to make my own website or domain. I think those are the same. Anyways, what do I need to know? I see some are cheap, some are expensive. I went to "godaddy.com" and they are 10 bucks for the first year. Is there any reason to prefer one over another? I know I've seen some have more bandwidth than others. I know some of you guys here have made your own websites. Any advice or links that covers this would be great. I'm clueless.

Use Godaddy, chances of them folding are nill to none :)

Last thing you need is your domain in limbo after you build a multi million dollar site.

Get hosting. Hosting can be cheap, as low as $3.99 for a crappy hostgator box.

Yeah I see they have deluxe hosting for 6.99 a month, and then a domain is just 1.99 for the first year, then 9.99 a year after that. The deluxe hosing is 150GB space, 1500GB transfer. Should be plenty I would think.

Question: It says when I get hosting, say their deluxe hosting, that I get 500 email accounts. So would I still want "personal email" for ~12 bucks for a year? I hate having my yahoo email, so I'd love to just have my own.

I second going with Godaddy for the reason Scott mentioned. Domain name ownership is a nasty business if your registrar takes a shit.

As for the email accounts.

You get the personal one if you dont have a domain+hosting, since you will be paying monthly for the hosting then you get the email address included. Only if you dont host with godaddy, then you can get a personal email address from them, but chances are whoever you host with will offer you mail services along with the hosting.

Sign up for gmail for domains and get top-notch spam filtering, ssl-encrypted webmail, pop, and imap. For free. Without the setup and maintenance headaches.

All you have to do is sign up, prove you own the domain, and point your MX records to the servers they specify.

i've always had a hard time considering something with "beta" in the main banner for years an unsafe permanent solution. :)
