selling a URL
I just got an email from the owner of music and acoustics site in London asking if I’d consider selling the the URL www.inoneear.com that I’ve owned for close to 7 yrs. While I’m not opposed to selling it and dealing with the inconvenience of changing my email address and various links etc., I don’t know what the URL is worth. According to leapfish.com(which appears is no longer around) the URL was worth $19,000(not that i really believe this) in April of 2007* when I checked based on traffic and how much the URL turns up in search engines etc. Now if you search on google you will see a lot of posts discrediting their appraisals. Anyone know of a site that offers such a service?
Initial email: Hi Paul I am interested in the possibility of purchasing the domain name www.inoneear.com that you have registered. Would you be willing to sell? This is a serious enquiry. Thanks Tom I wrote him back: While I am not looking to sell it I would entertain serious enough offers and be willing to deal with the inconveniences of email changes and site management. Paul to which he replied: Ok thanks for getting back to me Paul What do you deem the realms of a serious offer? Name your price. Thanks Tom I don't know where to begin. While I'd like to fool myself with illusions of grandeur on what the URL could fetch I don't want to scare him off and lose the chance to make a buck. (can you say built motor?) Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I know Phil sold this site and then kicked himself in the ass for accepting the offer he did(not that I am comparing my url to the magnet that mt.net is) All my sites(such as www.miatamx5.com) are subdomains of that main url so it would be quiet a PITA to re-organize everything. |
if he wanted it that bad he would have made an offer you can't refuse :)

Yeah reply saying "make me an offer I can't refuse, in USD".
|
way back there was a thread here that had a link to a domain value estimator - can't find it though - anybody?

sedo.com is one
estibot.com is another but look at the prices for miataturbo.net. I think phill was offered much more than that after he had made a deal with current owner. |

Music and acoustics my ass, he's starting an "ear sex" site based off that one family guy episode :)
|
Its worth whatever he is willing to pay. Ask him to make you his best offer and then just take on 30% to it. Tell him you want the offer in GBP.

i sold a domain once to a music guy. they dont have money.
|
this is the site in his signature www.DrownedinSound.com
personally i don't know why you'd want "in one ear" as the name of a site dedicated to music. wouldn't you want stereo or multichannel? |
tell him $2k
|
Rent it to him. Keep all your shit.
|
i think you can get a pretty penny
i have no ideas what URLs are sold for, we buy them pretty cheap, but not from individuals... i can see a URL go for high if the buyer wanted it enough...19K sounds a bit high, but i am no expert... just ask for what he is willing to fork out, and then start negotiating from there after all, you are the seller and calling your own price can just blow him out... ask what he's got to fork out, he sounds serious and is literate, lol |
