Hey all,
This is not Miata related. Rather 1988 Yamaha FJ1200 related. I just finished installing late model throttle bodies and a Microsquirt on my Dads bike. Now I need help tuning it, actually I just need someone to tune it in general. Here is a quick run down of what we got going on.

It is the FJ1200, air cooled motorcycle engine

Using 2006 Yamaha FJR1300 Throttle bodies w/vTPS and stock pressure regulator

XJR1300 stock ignition pick up coil, 24/2 rotor

Microsquirt

GM Map sensor, CLT, IAT sensors

GM LS2 coils

14point7 Spartan o2 controller

Airtex E8228; 100 - 125 PSI Max Pressure Range; 35 - 40 GPH Flow

The bike is running, it is rideable, but I think the tune is way off in left field and I need someone that is familiar with Tunerstudio and tuning. Basically we are trying to make the bike start up and run like a brand new fuel injected bike. So start (cold/hot), riding around town, cruising speeds, and spirited riding would all have to be addressed. I have a factory service manual for the FJ1200 with timing curves and all that good stuff if that would help out any.

I have the .msq and a couple of long logs of just regular riding, I don't know what kind of logging would be required to build a good map off of. We have a local dyno guy, but says the rollers are too heavy for the bike, so we are just hoping to be able to log via the bluetooth logger and build a very solid tune off of it.

Find a different dyno. I've got a mustang dyno locally that can disconnect one of the rear drums and they do motorcycles and snowmobiles on it. Or you could just not tune in real time, logging all the particulars. Any reason you just didnt rewire the bike to use the stock computer that goes with those ITBs and a power commander?

I believe the ECU is something that is not available for sale in the US from Yamaha new. We could probably source them on eBay. I asked my dad the same question, he told me why but I don't remember 100%, but I'm pretty sure that is the reason.


I have never messed with a power commander, but from a tunable stand point wouldn't the Microsquirt be a better platform? Like I said, I've got the bike up and running, it's just super rich, and I'm getting really bad break up once it gets hot. But since it's air cooled, I am using the coolant temp as an oil temp. Which these will regularly run in the 250* range, so I don't know if that is triggering some sort of limp mode. I don't know, I'm over my head as far as tuning goes. The physical wiring and setup was the easy part.

The wiring is the hard part, the tuning is the easy part. It just takes time. Not having a good base map is a problem, but you have it running, so you got the crank trigger stuff setup and have the fuel map close enough, which is the hardest part of tuning something from nothing. Go through all the settings and make sure you're not doing something funny with the coolant temp sensor, its probably pulling timing and dumping fuel at normal operating temp because you're using oil temp. Then its just a game of plug and chug.
