Shortblock Weight

Looking at shipping a shortblock and trying to get a freight quote. Anyone have a pretty good weight for a block, pistons, rods, crank, oil pump and pan?

I'd just weigh them, but it still has an automatic tranny, converter, etc attached and don't want to put the effort into tearing it apart until I know it can be sold. It's easier to move around as a whole now.

i can barely pick one up, so maybe 30lbs. j/k

i think its in the neighborhood of 75-100.

I'd say at least 100, pretty damn heavy.

I have a bathroom scale that isn't mine and a block that is. I'll see what I can reconcile there tonight.

in a rubbermaid tub with a few wood blocks to keep it from falling over

160.5 lbs

for just the shortblock (no pulley, no accessories, timing belt stuff intact, oil pan intact)

and ps scott: I can lift it myself. i'll get the hernia sewn up some other time.

I shipped a built shortblock via UPS Ground in the past. It was actually only a few bucks more than freight. IIRC it was 80lbs.

I just had a BARE block shipped and came to exactly 70lbs...
No special packaging, just a creative use of cardboard and tape...

FYI i was getting ground quotes of $100ish from the 3 main players...edit: VIA GROUND :tide
Luckily I found a hookup, u know fed-ex employees get friggin 75% OFF!!!??!!

odd. I wonder if it wasn't flat on the scale. if the rotating assembly and timing belt stuff is 90 lbs I'll eat my hat!

TonyV 06-18-2008 11:04 PM

dunno, but mine was weighed @ fed-ex.. 69.9lbs to be exact

no hernia tossing it in here...it wasnt very easy either, if you would have watched you would have laughed.

I tore it down and weighed it last night. Block, rotating assy, oil pump, water pump, cover, oil pan came to 145 lbs on a bathroom scale.

Sounds right to me. A longblock w/ pan & cover is 325 in a crate. I ship out 1 or 2 every week.

y8s 06-19-2008 10:54 AM

that's some heavy shit.

It's more than 70 lbs, It's a bitch and half to pick up. I have one sitting on my matco roll cart, and i'd rather push it off onto a table (it slides well on cardboard) than pick it up..

That's a 03 block, and rotating assembly.
