Should I sell my car or should I keep it? *NOW WITH POLL*
I've got a lightly modified NA w/ new tires that I won't be able to drive on a regular basis for probably 6 months total, 3 months away, 10-24 days at home, at least 2 months away, maybe more and then I should be able to have it again, but maybe not for all I know. I've probably put around 6K into it including the purchase price, including new tires about 2 months ago, which would kill me to practically give away.
My parents will drive it around now and then so I don't have to worry about anything that happens when cars aren't driven enough.
If I keep it I'll be paying insurance on a car I'm not driving, but not much, just basic coverage since I won't be around to drive it.
The problem is I don't think it has an LSD and I'm not going to have an easy time installing one. If I keep it I would have to make a lot of changes to make it what I want, but if I had an NB I wouldn't have to do so much, at least to the interior.
The car is a "known known", I know its in good shape and not in need of any major repair, which I can't completely guarantee if I get a different car.
When I am able to have a car I'd have significantly more saved up then I do now and I'd be able to get the NB that I really want (lowish miles '99 10AE or '01+ w/ Torsen & a 6 speed)
What says the gays?

I am in the same situation. I love my 92 NA but I will have to dump some time and money into it to get it where I want it in terms of power. It seems more time and cost effective to buy a miata that already has the bits I want on it and sell mine, but I am kind of in love with my mariner blue.
Do you like the look of the NB's more? If so then I think it is a win win to sell yours for the car you really want.

Keep it. The first chance you get call USAA for insurance. They're for military member and awesome. Also once military, always military to them. Very low hassle claims and they do a ton of other stuff. Enough about them. As soon as you get out of basic go home on recruiters assistance, get your car, and drive to your first base. Win. You will be foaming at the mouth for freedom and a car is what you need. Also if you can wait, don't get your home stuff TMO'd until you move off base. You only get one time to ship your household goods. Dorms are small and if it doesn't fit in the miata you probably don't need it. Buy a big TV. Wait.....aren't you going Marine?

Just use USAA for everything. Insurance, banking, renters insurance, home loans, ......investments. I use them for everything, but retirement investments. I had a guy before the military. If you find a cheaper place, REALLY check it out. Every claim I've had with them has been really easy, quick, and painless. Trust me Progressive and a few others screwed me. My cars seem to be magnets for accidents while they are parked and I'm nowhere around. USAA does some weird things too. Like no deductable high value insurance (wedding rings and guitars), house hunting in house, they even used my disability as income to help me get the '99s loan on the cheap. When i was in Italy working 18hr days I constantly forgot about my bill. Like 4months behind forgot and got cut off. I called them and they said no problem, I payed them for the next month, and they changed my account to not show a break in coverage, even backdated my coverage to when I was cut off. They said I never had an accident so who cares basically. Just went on like it never happened. Also FYI they're renters insurance is worldwide. IE: My stuff in my folks storage unit in CA., stuff in garage, or stuff on my porch is covered.
(I do not work for USAA, just a big fan. They do way more than anyone thinks they do)

Keep it, and drive it when you get the opportunity to. During the 6 years i worked overseas, I only got to drive my miata 2 weeks every 6 months, and it was worth keeping. please keep in mind that i am drunk off my *** right now, and my view might be different if i was sober.

Why sell a known, paid for and functional car just because you'll be going to boot camp and your A/B school or whatever you call it? When I enlisted I left my miata at my parents' place and when they closed down tech school training for a couple weeks because of christmas, I flew home and drove it the 1000 miles back to Keesler AFB.
Let me tell you, having a car while in tech school kept me from going insane. Otherwise you had to wait for a bus that came once an hour and stopped running at like 8pm or just hoof it off base if you wanted to go do something. ---- walking everywhere. Even got some autox in on the weekends. Also took advantage of the on base auto hobby shop and installed a bunch of stuff. $4/hr lifts and everything.
