Sinus cold killing me..so, I shot water in my nose

Yup, its true!

I tried out Nasal Irrigation

One of weirdest things I've ever done but it prepares you for waterboarding LOL
The first try was not pleasant.

Neti Pot
8oz of warm water
1 tblspn of sea salt

Video of some guy doing it.

Overall impression of it??? Well, it sure as heck cleans your sinuses out better than pills or even blowing your nose. In fact, yesterday I did it about 5 times, congestion was far better with the exception of my ears.

I am still sick, taking sinus pills but I will continue to use this method as it is actually pretty bad ass. And... I get to show everyone coming over how i pour water in one nostril and it comes out the other nostril.

Another great video (MUST WATCH)..lol

I've been using it for years, it really does make a difference. Specially when you get used to it, it feels awesome, and its amazing to see what comes out.

MAKE SURE YOU USE THE SALT - I didn't and it hurt like hell.

Try something called Sinus Rinse from your local pharmacy. It's over the counter and better delivery method than tilting your head. Best part, is it comes with packets of pH balanced salt so you don't burn the crap out of your sinuses like you do with sea salt. You can thank me later.

http://www.neilmed.com/usa/products.php#sinusrinse

Use two packets for better effect.

You know what, on the first try I didn't use salt. I thought to myself, "why the f*ck would I put salt in my nose!!!"

LOL, it hurt. A LOT!

Good to see others have tried this. I was going to post it yesterday but ended up going to bed. Did it again this morning and honestly had to post this for others to try. :)

NeilMed Pharmaceuticals, Makers of Sinus Rinse, NasaFlo Netipot, Nasal Irrigation

I'm going to have to check it out. Every year I seem to battle the same thing, sinus colds when the weather changes. :jerkit:

Loki047 12-31-2008 11:23 AM

FYI - keep an eye out for the salt packets, I found them extremely useful to keep the salt water solution the same. If your having trouble with it, hum, it keeps you breathing and helps dislodge and irritants

jmack 12-31-2008 11:26 AM

WTF you made a post about this... life changing event I guess :bang:

Quality Control Bot 12-31-2008 11:39 AM

:p Hey man, it was a big thing. Tired of the sinus cold and this really made me feel better.

LOL

Seafoam works well in a pinch also.

thymer 12-31-2008 12:18 PM

I am so going to try this. I have sucky sinus's headaches etc. Probably doesn't help that we have three dogs and two cats. Wonder if the pulsing ones work even better?

Yeah, ditto. Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd, and a Blue Healer. Shedding beasts. Not to go off-topic but we got one of these a couple years ago and it really works well. Amazon.com: FURminator Medium Yellow Deshedding Tool with 2-2/3-Inch Edge: Kitchen & Dining

I've been using a Neti Pot for years too. It helps when you are sick, but it also help to keep you from getting sick. Just flush your sinuses out every couple of weeks.

Some of the natural organic health food stores sell the packets of salt blends, and I have even seen some that have small amount of oil in them. Never tried the ones with oil though.

Hey, at least it wasn't coffee enemas.

y8s 12-31-2008 01:43 PM

the word is "isotonic" saline solution. .9% salt solution. it's the same concentration as your blood and should be pretty mild.

Stephanie Turner 12-31-2008 02:21 PM

Hey my Doctor gave this to me to use. The neil med stuff works great, and doesn't burn as much. Since I have chronic sinusitis, this stuff keeps me sane.

my girlfriend does that and also swears it works. apparently it's been around for a long long time, especially in other parts of the world. i've never tried it myself, it kinda grosses me out for some reason.

fucking hippies.

Toddcod 12-31-2008 03:08 PM

I use table salt and tap water.
I don't do the pouring thing. I mix mine for a descent burn.....

I pour some in my left hand. And then close off one nostril with my right hand. And suck the solution through the other.
I usually have to do it this way. My sinuses usually close almost close one to both nostrils off.

It works great.

I am not telling anyone to do this. I am a respirtory therapist. But not a doctor or even qualified to give any advise.

But the reason it works so well is:

Antibiotics work to kill the bacteria through your body.

Bacterial colonies are growing in your snot. So the antibiotics are working at the tissue level. I guess some in the fluids building the mucous. But...

Salt is a great bacteria killer on alot of levels.

When you suck (flush) the salt water up your nose. You are flushing out some of the bacterial colonies in a moment. You spit them out. Bam your body doesn't have to work against that colony anymore.
Also the salt going in the nasal passage also kills bacteria. And the salt residue left in the passage kills bacteria too.

It is a faster process to get bacteria growing in snot.

Salt water is also great for a sour throat.

whiskey is great for sweating out a cold as well. And is a cheap cough surpresant too.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use Vicks sav, or Ben gay, Icy hot or something menthol like on your chest. (DO NOT PUT THESE IN YOUR NASAL FLUSH)

Also peppermints, cough drops, extremly hot cinniman candy help open your sinuses.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dont do any of this crap cause I said so. You are responsible for yourself. My coments should be taken as bs. Go to your doctor.

I have found this works well, but do these at your own risk. I am not a doctor.

kotomile 12-31-2008 04:00 PM

Hmm, I might try this before going for a run, extra mucus tends to slow me down a lot. Any reason why I shouldn't? :)

I do this as well, and I think it helps a lot.

What I find helps sometimes is a little warm cognac or brandy - nothing sweet or fruit flavored because the sugar contributes to mucus formation (mucus is essentially sugar+protein+water in suspension - that's why you need to drink lots of water and lay off beer with a cold).

I take a small shot of cognac in a snifter, nuke it for 10 sec in a microwave, then spend about 1/2 hour sniffing deeply and taking very small sips. The first couple big snorts will feel like somebody sprayed gasoline up your nose, but it gets better fast - maybe the alcohol fumes kill the nerve endings. For some reason, cognac works for me, but I've tried various whiskeys and they didn't seem to work the same.
