Been reading a lot about Vinyl vs paint job and was wondering if anyone in our community has any experience or insight about it that they would like to share.

Dont do it, My friend got it done on his rx7 and it came out alright but cleaning it is a pain. Look up plastidip, Iv done 2 cars and doing my miata in a couple of months i love the stuff no hastal at all and its the same as vinyl without the hastle. dipyourcar.com

Buddy did a 'variant' of a vinyl wrap. Suits his racecar quite well and is easy to repair/replace etc....

Learning how to do proper body work is rewarding. Perhaps you could volunteer at a local shop for a bit and then work on your car there. Paint isn't difficult to repair/up keep once you know how to do it.

Vinyl - last time I checked it was still too much money and tough to clean. As mentioned above, plasti dip if need be - you can always peel it off if you don't like it.

Can someone explain Plastidip in a sentence? Does it have the same sort of gloss in person?

As far as I have read, it's spray on rubbery stuff that can either be matte or gloss.

I wonder how well it (plastidip) covers the typical fiberglass stress cracks, anyone have any first hand experience with this?

Im not sure, but from my experience painting my wheels black, I would bet it would do a pretty good job covering them up. You can kinda get away with laying this stuff on pretty thick, and letting water tension of a sort smooth things out. obviously you cant just dump the stuff on something, but it covered up some blemishes on my wheels. I dont see why it wouldnt work on fiberglass cracks.

Can you do more than one coat in spots or do you have to respray entire panel?

I have a buddy who had peeling and blemishes on his mr2. He plastdipped it after doing some minor sanding and you can't even tell how bad the original paintjob is.

You just spray it in bunch of thin coats (3-4). You can respray an area. From my experience you cannot sand it like paint/primer. I've never seen a gloss finish, all of them are matte.

As far as the panel respray.. you have to coat it few times to about 1/16" thick Say you want to respray only a part, you can cut the part that you want and u can respray it however you'll be able to see the line where the part was ripped off. The main benefit to it is you can peal the old paint you want to respray and spray it again fresh or if you dont care you can just spray away at it and have a little bump in the paint.

They have a gloss finish you can buy and apply over the matte finish to get a gloss finish. I haven't seen it in the meatspace though, only in pictures.

Only adds a few ounces. Pretty much all the weight is liquid, and once it's evaporated there's not much left.

We just got a "Pro" kit at work, gonna do a few cars and see what it's like. I've seen wheels and cars in person, and it's a semi-matte finish for sure. You can get a gloss clear to top off the colors and while not glassy like paint it adds a good amount of shine.

Here's a GTR that we worked on last month, shows how versatile the material is (even if you don't like the application lol). This is all Plastidip.

https://www.dipyourcar.com/home.php lots of pictures here and on their forum. Not a huge fan of the way it looks, but to each his own. I think small parts, grilles, etc., can look good, but the whole car is too much for me.
