I ended up getting out of the buyer's market for a while. Decided not to get a Miata. Decided not to get anything actually. Until a good deal rolled around... Something akin to my screen name.

Nice, I've always liked those.

What can you possibly want more then a Turbo'd Miata? :fawk:

Edit.
Besides the 944 =]

patsmx5 01-14-2009 02:56 PM

Nice. Friend of mine has a few 944's. Fun to drive. Can't say the same about working on them...

944obscene 01-14-2009 03:11 PM

Yeah. Effing spark plugs are a biatch. I had to slip a U join on the socket after dropping it onto the plug and smashing in down with hand pressure, just to get the #4 out. The thing is FAST though. I love it.

I still want a Miata though. The 944 will be a crappy autocrossing car, because the turbo lag cuts the power in half. So it's like lag-lag-lag, SPINNNNNN! Weak. Now out at Hallett it will be a dream to have the 944.

I want to find a cheap NA to replace my Saturn. I don't need more than one passenger at a time anyway. HAHA

m2cupcar 01-14-2009 03:28 PM

Is that car a reliable 350atw w/o going into the motor? I know they fly at PCA races, but not sure what's gone into them, and thought I remembered that number being thrown out. How heavy?

944obscene 01-14-2009 05:26 PM

I've seen as high as 600 wheel on a dyno with stock internals. Granted the person building the car up knew what they were doing. Most guys can get close to 400whp and stay comfortable with the engine's capabilities. My first goal is 300wheel. I'd really like to see as high as 320 on my first go around. After I get the bigger turbo and bolt-on's, I'm shooting for 400 at the crank.

I don't need all that power, but the build I'm going for should leave the car completely controllable on the track with a useable powerband. I mean. In stock form the thing produces 220hp, but makes an amazing 240+ torque. And I've blown out my cat. Pretty sure of that. The car is a little louder than it should be, stock and it pulls great up top.

To put that into context, I've pulled a modded Mazdaspeed 3, 270whp Tiburon, and a modded S2k all from a 40 roll. And then there was the Honda EK coupe with an H22 swap last week and some guy in a modded 300ZX last night. He was cool. His turbo "lit" a lot sooner than mine, but when I got full boost I pulled past him pretty strong. I can hang with my friend that has a modded 350Z. All the bolt-ons with a new tune.

I hope I can get some LS1's later this year! That will be some down-n-dirty fun!

If you don't have a purist attitude a megasquirt/wb, bigger cleaned used injectors, mbc, rebuilt k27 turbo, and 3 or 4in exhaust would do wonders at reaching +350hp on the cheap.

As long as you don't do alot of drag launches. There's some kind of issue with pilot/throwout bearings.

kotomile 01-14-2009 09:10 PM

Nice, clean find. You're going to remove the "OMFG I can't believe I'm driving a Porsche!!" front vanity plate though, right?

Fireindc 01-15-2009 01:20 AM

Clean find. I love it.

+1 on removing the el douchebag vanity plate.

Toddcod 01-15-2009 01:32 AM

I like those! nice find, very shiny.

96rdstr 01-15-2009 12:41 PM

KLR and DME chips work wonders on 951's. I always wanted an 89 Turbo S.

messiahx 01-15-2009 01:09 PM

Awesome ride. I was looking at getting a 944 before I got the miata. Maintenance costs scared me away at the time. 944s are badass, especially since they can hang with the 911s of their day.

9671111 01-15-2009 01:09 PM

Love to have one if I had the pockets deep enough.

ChairFaceChippendale 01-15-2009 06:02 PM

well done sir. i love porsches

as soon as i have the cash and a garage i will be getting an air cooled (yeah, technically oil cooled) 911 of some vintage.

Yeah, the engineer I got it from decided he liked it. I just don't want to know what kind of paint-work will be needed after I take it off.

In 89, they actually dropped the "S" designation. All turbo's from '89-forth, used the larger K27/8 turbo and DME. They were all basically S's. I would have loved to get an '89 actually. But this thing is balls-to-the-wall fast as it is. Pulls strong, to 140+ in stock form! I've only done it a couple times.

I'm getting the Cupcar software flash from my 944 specialist. He's probably got more experience with 944's than anyone else in the country. Seeing as he's been behind the development of the car, and helped build some prototype race-versions back in the 80's and 90's.

Basically, I'm gonna do 3 or 4 inch straight pipe, with the software and a larger #8 hot-housing, shimmed wastegate and a better bypass valve. That should get me the goal I'm looking for. I think there were a couple other things. The k26 compressor will support into the 300's. I would get a k27 compressor, but the lag is more pronounced than I would like. I already have to wait longer than most of you with good sized turbo's for full boost. Its rediculous. Lag kills these motors. When I go to replace the turbo with a bigger unit, I will go for a newer KKK turbo that can light up sooner on my engine.

Hang with and beat, if they're on a good track.

mazda/nissan 01-15-2009 06:09 PM

I was looking at a 944, until I realized it would be a bitch to work on. So now I'm eyeballing E36 M3's

944obscene 01-15-2009 06:14 PM

Its really not that bad, guys. If you can count your IQ on at least two hands, you can work on a 951. The bitch is all the shit you have to do sometimes, just to get one thing done. BUT, I can understand the reasoning. 944's really don't need servicing a LOT. So I guess it balances the effort into clusters of hard work and busted hands. Other than that, you can beat on them without worry of mechanical failure.

johndoe 01-15-2009 06:24 PM

How much does it weigh?

18psi 01-15-2009 06:26 PM

I'm also interested in the weight and performance numbers of this car, because unless the cars you mentioned were all running like shit or not really modded, I just dont see a 220/240 car pulling on some of them.

a bolt on msp3 can hit low 12's....a modded 300zx can be anything from 13's all the way down to 10's.

This is not to say anything negative about it, its a great car.

944obscene 01-15-2009 06:57 PM

It weighs about 2950. I know for a fact, the cat is blown out. Other than that, the boost gauge reads stock BAR and there are no chips that I know of. But I'm going to give it a once-over. I think I'm going to winterize it until the temperatures stabilize. It's been up, down, up, down... Freezing, to short-sleeve shirt weather. Ugh...

I'll be more than happy to get vids of the car in action. I think the S2K vid was on film. My friend that owns it recorded the race IIRC. Other than that, its just my word. When its cold out, the car will light the tires in second if I just nail the throttle. 1st is useless at these temps. haha

cueball1 01-15-2009 08:34 PM

Maf and chip that thing!

Did they come with BB or sleeve turbo's. What's the build routine to hit 350+ rwhp? What gets you better spool? I know anything you'd want to do has well documented upgrade paths on those. Just wondering what the most bang for the buck is on them!

Old school Turbo lag sucks donkeys. Quicker spool FTW!

I see..well I'm not calling you out or anything, just really curious. Anything can happen on the street, and no one knows how well said cars were running...but 2900lbs is definitely not light. 220/240 is a good power/torque to weight ratio, but some of the cars you mentioned are definitely capable of completely destroying this car in a race, which brought up my question.

RotorNutFD3S 01-15-2009 09:10 PM

Glad to see you finally found one man. You've been talking about this forever!

mazda/nissan 01-15-2009 09:45 PM

I think I recall 944's having problematic timing belt tensioners, or something to do with that, I take it yours is fine?

IcantDo55 01-15-2009 10:46 PM

My room mate almost finished restoring his. parts are a fortune!

I have an 87 951 here for parts of you need anything.

944obscene 01-17-2009 03:23 AM

Hey, IcantDo55, you have an urgent PM

New story! You won't believe me. I went out for a little bit to a local cruise spot and found another race. Modded new Mustang GT. He had at least full pipes and it was a stick-shift. It was WAY too loud to be running stock manifolds. had to be headers and all. I told him I hadn't raced a Mustang, and he wanted to see what my "little turbo car" could do. We lined up and did a 20 roll. He jumped up and held half a car on me until I got 3rd where I was nose-to-nose with him. We did this a couple times, then got on the highway and did a pull all the way through 4th (which puts me at about 130).

We started at about 40 and just went at it. I held with him through 3rd with a tiny little pull on him, then when I got into 4th I pulled about a car, or car and a half on him before Letting off. I was stoked the whole time! I looked up the power output on the new Mustangs, and stock, the motor makes like 300-315. I don't know what they can do with I/H/E.

I'm gonna get a vid of this thing in action so you can see it. Its like I'm accelerating in a vacuum up top or something. After my mustang runs, I did a little pull with my friend in his RX8. The thing is stock accept a Mazda ECU reflash (apparently the RX8's have had power issues, so Mazda did a higher-performance reflash or something. Gets like 15 hp at the wheels or so). He said I shot about an 8 inch flame out the tailpipe when I shifted, so I know my cat is gone. It pops really fucking loud when does this. That alone could free up some power, but I'm wondering if there is a set of chips on this car. The turbo is stock, and its running stock boost, but the thing seems to breathe so well!

I'll keep you guys posted for a vid. Maybe race the supercharged Tib and the S2k for you or something. That Mustang had me flipping bananas for a little while. I thought for sure he was going to pull me up top.

No shit... I've been looking for a car for like 4-5 years now. Its about damn time haha.

fahrvergnugen 01-18-2009 01:11 PM

Like someone else, I too was considering one of these cars, but not after looking at parts prices and how fun they are to work on. Porsche is one of my favorite brands, would love to have one... But, I will go the cheaper route instead (miata).

Congrats on the purchase, I am envious...
