Speed 6 - any comments?
I may have to get a new car and was thinking of the Mazdaspeed 6 '06 model. Looks like I can get the Sport on the company "S-plan" for 25,833.
Most reviews are favorable and I just wonder if I will want to upgrade this turbo like I do with the miata.... Anyone have one - driven one??? |
My buddy almost bought one last week at $25k for the GT with nav (He would up with a 300c SRT for $32k). The dealer had over 30 of them on the lot. They would do just over $20k for the sport. Maybe your dealer has some room on the price of the sport?

I drove one around, it was fun. It was wet out and it held really nice. It was about as fast as my miata at 6psi. The 4wd is nice to. Just go to the dealer and rag the hell out of one you dont want and if you like take it. Sorry for the short and blunt input but im about to walk out the door. Good luck

$25K is way too much for a Sport. Aim for $22K and shop around, it's not that hard to find. A very nice car too BTW, a lot of car for $22K.
|
THey are ok. Dont have a strong opinion for or against. Driven a couple.
|
one of my best friends has one, it's a neat car with a lot of torque but is also a big heavy car. The turbo is too small and runs out of steam after 5k rpm or so. he also broke the rear diff already. but i does drive and handle nice. oh and he only get around 10mpg. Overall i wouldn't get one unless it were cheap.
|
Thanks guys - I was thinking that about 22 for the sport would be ideal. I have read that seems to be the case, and they are sitting on the lots by all accounts. Maybe ppl just dont know what they are and either just buy the regular ones or go to another make and spend a bit more.
Not sure why Mach929 mate only got 10mpg.... should be more than that unless he is racing all the time |
i think it's a matter of the turbo being so small you're basically in boost all the time, i drove it for a while and i go terrbile mpg too.
|
IIWY, I'd get the speed 3. Sure, it's not AWD, but it's also much lighter.
|
$22K isnt that almost $10K off msrp?
Can I get one in nor-cal for that price? |
Mazdaspeed 6
I have been driving one for the last 6 months. Leased it a while ago for a very good price ($274 a month). It is OK, but as other people said, as bit too heavy. I have upgraded it with a magnaflow exhaust, mazdaspeed intake and lowered it one inch. I know that some other upgrades are on their way from www.cp-e.com. Overall, for 22K it is a good deal, but if you have a bit more, you can go to Evo or STI.

damn- the gains from that ms6 downpipe are amaaaaaazing!
|
Hell yeah they are! But for 700 bucks I'd be tempted to see if a local fabricator could duplicate it.
|
Mazda is doing $7500 off all 06 6's when financed through MAC. That works out to about $21K for a no-option Sport. I hadn't heard gas mileage was that bad though, seems like most people get low 20's in the city on mazda6club's MS6 forum. Oh, and the turbo isn't that small, it's just bled off at high RPM. Boost controllers and non crappy BOV's have seen 70whp gains at redline.

You live in Cali and are restricted to 91octane. I'm on the fence for a Mazaspeed3 to replace the wifes Celica and have been hanging out in both the 3 and 6 forums. The cars do not like less than 93 and restrict boost at higher RPM's with less. Bottom line, you won't make the full 16psi in Cali.
http://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?showtopic=43875 I'm hopefully moving back to Cali in two years... not sure I'm gonna get one after all. You could just add toluene (available in commercial paint stripper) when you fill up with gas. You'd have to calculate how much you'd need to bring up the gas a couple of octane points. Could be as little as a gallon per fill-up, depending on the size of the gas tank. If you buy the toluene in a large enough quantity, it should cost much more, if any, than 91 octane gas anyway.

If gas prices are high and I just want to drive the car, I can use cheap gas and not hurt anything? That is great I don't want to boost all the time anyway. use 87 or 89 for normal driving and 91 plus booster for the weekends:bigtu: That's it this is my car. Also looking at the Lexus IS250 allwheel, G35X, and Jaguar Xtype, WRX wagon |

I'm following this thing really closely to see what happens. If it's as they're saying, them Mazda really f'ed this up. How could you buy one knowing this? I could totally understand pulling a little timing and dropping a pound or two of boost when running on crappy gas, but 100hp??? Who is Mazda kidding? |
How hard is it to carry a can of toluene with you when you go to fill up with gas? I mean, people have done that with fuel injector cleaner bottles, a quart of motor oil, etc.
They should just market it in California honestly, showing the true horsepower available on 91 octane. |

speaking of prices- these are from yesterday's ATL paper. That's pre-S plan, which would put the base under $20k!
