Default Legality question regarding emulators

I was talking to a friend an emulator "system" and it got me thinking - what is the law regarding emulators? Say, for example, one were to build a PS2 replacement with upgraded specs, but it ran on Windows with an emulator.

Assuming the games are purchased legally, what is the legality of this? I would assume it's breaching a couple of copywrite laws because you're running games for a specific system on something other than that system.

Thoughts?

Everything you do can be construed as illegal if someone puts alot of time and money into it. That being said, I am sure that it is, because there are probably unique codes copyrighted for the use of the game.

Thought I would share my idea since it's pretty cool (at least in my mind)

Build a basic computer using MicroATX components. Run a very minimalist version of XP (Such as tinyxp, with just the basics). Run some sort of media manager that starts on boot-up. Use the media manager to control different emulators.

List of supported things that I can think of:
NES/SNES
Gameboy/GBA
PS1
N64
Dreamcast
PS2
Wii

Pretty much anything there's an emulator for could be run off of it. Stick it in a plexiglass case and run an HDMI video cable to a TV or something. Use whatever controller you damn well please, since there's so many of them. I would use a 360 controller, just because I feel like that's the most comprehensive and well-designed controller that's out on the market today.

I priced it out, and it comes to around 360 bucks before shipping. This includes everything you need to build it except the case. Decently spec'd system. 2gb ram, i3 3.1ghz dual core, random mobo, Geforce GT 128 512mb 522mhz. CD/DVD drive, 500gb hdd.

Not really good by traditional computer standards, but it would have no problem running any of the emulators or games listed above. The nice thing about this is that it doesn't really have to be a good computer, it just has to have a powerful processor and decent video card.

I'll be building one when I can put the money together to get rid of the mess of councils I have right now. Best part is that I can use both "Backup" games and the games I have sitting on my shelf because most emulators nowadays are capable of using the CD drive.

Lots of people do it. Usually they build an arcade box enclosure and hook up some sweet controllers + buttons so it looks like a coin op. The legality of emulators is precarious, but doesn't a copyright expire after a while? So like old school stuff like neo-geo, master system, nes, atari, etc, should be totally fine.

Personally though playing the games on an emulator/computer just isn't the same experience. I collect old school game systems and have a blast firing them up every once in a while. Nothing like having hand cramps from the horribly designed controllers. For leet sake here's my console list:
Turbo grafx 16
3DO
NES
SNES
Sega CDX
Sega Saturn
Atari Jaguar
Sony Playstation
PS2
Wii
Atari Lynx
Neo Geo Pocket Color
Original Gameboy
Gameboy Color
Tiger Game.com
Gameboy Advance
Nintendo Gamecube
Sega Master System
That's all I think...

I really want a Neo Geo.

I built these in '99. Probably spent around $3000 total. Both are MAME emulators, use real 25" fixed frequency arcade monitors and arcade buttons/joysticks, contain low end computers running Win98DOS (boot to command line). Was a good project and can probably be built for next to nothing right now.

Legal stuff:
Yeah, I'm sure it is illegal but why are you worried about it? I doubt that Commodore is going to come after you for emulating a C64...

Oh, one more thing. I think I can emulate most of the stuff you are wanting with my XBox1. I recently built another one so the prices are freash in my head. I bought the box for $35 at a pawn shop and paid $15 for a mod chip. So, for $50 and 60 minutes of work you would be well on your way to playing Zelda.

The primary aim of releasing this is to try and stimulate the xbox homebrew dev community a little as things seem to be quieting down a bit lately.
You are encouraged to make as many changes to the code as you want and submit them back to us for inclusion in a future version.
There are a few, hopefully non-restrictive, licencing type rules at the top of dash.cpp about what you can and can't do with the source to team xos developed code. They are not there to limit what you can do with the code but more to ensure that you release the modified source to any released binaries to help the development community. Certain parts of the code written outside of Team XOS have slightly more restrictive licences but please always follow the licence the original developers have assigned to there code.
Everything is more than basic in this current version but features are:
* Emulates Snes, Nes, sms, megadrive
* Configurable rom, application and game paths via XML config file
* Dashboard style app launching
* The skelton code for some other features
