srt-4 opinions?

Alrighty so uhh yeah...

Just trying to spark a conv.

I was actually considering one a while ago. I am always back and fourth. On one hand they are easy to mod but on the other they are easy to blow up and don't last more than 75K miles even if you keep'em stock. :ugh2:

I guess the reason i bring this up is because one pulled on me the other night. :crx: I have spanked them before. I know im probly only around 180hp but i never got the chance to ask him his mods.

Anyways, anyone got any input. Other than they are domestic rice with turbos.

rotaryjunky 12-17-2006 09:14 AM

I am partial to them because of the price/power equation. Most of them will have been beat on, not many old ladies who only drove it on the weekends. (although the used car salesman may disagree) Actually I like the interior dispite its crudeness, I like the lack of a real muffler, and I like the serious pull. However, it is FWD, and this car is VERY FWD. And the early ones don't even have an LSD, I think. There are plenty of other options.

Mach929 12-17-2006 09:47 AM

they can be had cheap now, and they're fun

Atlanta93LE 12-17-2006 10:28 AM

Personally, I'd spring for a Cobalt SS Supercharged over an SRT-4. But not yet folks...not quite yet... (think: what FI ecotec variant has GM recently introduced? Would there be a reason to continue the supercharged ecotec...?)

samnavy 12-17-2006 10:32 AM

Just me talking here... I don't understand the appeal of a front-wheel drive car from a performance standpoint. Any car can be made to go fast in a straight line with enough power and rubber, but when it comes to cornering... FWD just isn't any fun.

The wife and I need 4-doors. We went and test drove a Mazda6, MS6, and MS3 this weekend. The Mazda6 was great, auto-6sp, plenty of power, good handling, just like it should be. The MS6 was fairly fast, ZERO LAG, nice grip, worth the money. The MS3 was a f-ing handful. It just required too much attention anywhere approaching any limit. Wheelspin in a corner was uncontrollable at even partial throttle, lots of body-roll, moderate understeer. I just can't see it. Don't get me wrong, it was lots of fun... but way more trouble than it's worth.

I will say that the clutches on both of those cars sucked. The bottom 3 inches of pedal travel did NOTHING. Then between inch 3.1 and 3.2, everything happend, then another 3 inches to the top of travel. SUCK!

I have an '05 SRT-4..

It's pretty quick stock, I dunno about the "doesn't last more than 75k" thing, what is it that you've heard fails, snowsurfer? I haven't had any problems and I'm at 48k miles.

Rotaryjunkie: The '03 had LSD as an option and all the '04s and '05s have one.

Atlanta: Cobalt SS's are sooo slow. Not knocking on your preference but they are not good in my opinion.

Sam: won't disagree with you there, the FWD kinda sucks. 1st gear is USELESS in the SRT4 even on dry pavement. If anyone here gets an SRT4 with the intention of making it fast one of the first mods should be wider tires (215 is stock, wider wheels would help too) and stiffer engine mounts.

All in all, I can't complain, I needed a 4-door car with a decent trunk and the SRT4 fit the bill.

Atlanta93LE 12-17-2006 10:44 AM

koto, I wouldn't buy the current Cobalt SS. I'd wait...I was trying to hint at what might be in the works

magnamx-5 12-17-2006 10:46 AM

at least our defective intakes work, to cool our real cars

Ben 12-17-2006 10:52 AM

Are you talking about their 1k hp turbocharged drag motor?

Haha, no. I'm referring to the turbo engine in the Solstice GXP. No reason it wouldn't go into the Cobalt soon, once the supercharged setup is killed off.

Ben 12-17-2006 10:57 AM

ahh... oh well, I still would rather have the methanol powered 2.0l boosted @ 40 psi. :bigtu:

hustler 12-17-2006 12:56 PM

fwd, but I guess its a good daily. I'd rather have something like an accord though, or a truck since we have miaters for fun.

getsidewaysd1 12-17-2006 02:01 PM

I mean hell, if you do need a 4-door family car or something with a big trunk, get a used bug-eyed WRX. They can be had for like $13,000 now a days.

kotomile 12-17-2006 02:57 PM

That would have been my 2nd choice, but the wife loves the SRT4 since she misses her '98 Neon.

ATL: Are there plans to ditch the roots and put the turbo Ecotec in the Cobalt? If so, that's a step in the right direction.

Snowsurfer03 12-17-2006 06:37 PM

KOTOMILE- I dont know. I was just talkin. I was looking at the srt fourms and it just seems like everyone has blown a motor on there. Maby cuz of crappy tuning :ugh2:

anyways good for you that everything is holding up for ya.

I guess im just pissed cuz i thought when i raced that one the other night it would be an easy kill. He was definetly not stock!

I guess thats the appeal of the turbo car because you can tweak things and find butt loads of extra power.

WELP...LATA BROTHERS!!! UHHRRRRRR HULKMANIA!!! LOL:bigtu:

Fritch 12-17-2006 07:38 PM

it seems like most SRT4 owners are tools, at least around here in Tampa

bunch of sissy emo douchebags for the most part, but not all

Braineack 12-17-2006 07:48 PM

eastcoastboost.com was formed by like 80% of srt-4 owners. now of all the orginal guys more than half of them sold them....probably a reason why.

adbradley 12-17-2006 11:05 PM

i was looking on a spec sheet for that ecotec 2.0 turbo engine, it was saying they are pumping 20 psi boost into that thing. Thats crazy for a factory boosted car!

Atlanta93LE 12-17-2006 11:07 PM

Haven driven the Solstice GXP, I can say...it is quite an engine.

adbradley 12-17-2006 11:11 PM

those things handle very good?? i like the way they look
