Steam Powered Miata

Can it be done?

Use water to cool the charge

Have steam in cylinders

Have steam in exhaust

Steam everywhere.

Is this a win?

Good project.

Drugs are bad, mmkay?

Faeflora 03-15-2012 07:21 PM

Well no, serious, instead of ONLY using exhaust heat and flow to spin turbo, use it to make steam!

Which could then be used to do other things.

Things like

Steam powered insta-boost

Steam powered combustion chamber cooling

Steam powered hydraulics

Steam powered lighting

Steam adjustable suspension

Or just fill the radiator with it.

You could even use it to purify water!

Also could be a good theft deterrent, like melt their skin off when they try to take off with the car.

If your pressurizing this steam system you could also use it for the horn. Nothing sounds more scary than when a steamline ruptures.

A senior design project at Uconn used a smart car (or something similar) and a converted a motorcycle engine to run on steam. It moved... barely, But it was cool. A lot cooler than the senior design I got stuck doing.

Why not just weld-up the spark plug holes and fill it with diesel?

gearhead_318 03-15-2012 08:14 PM

How would you heat the water to make steam?

It will sound like the teal miata.

Faeflora 03-16-2012 01:27 AM

Dude all you have to do is make an exhaust pipe inside an exhaust pipe and fill it with the watets.

Presto. Full of steam.

You could also put some carrots in there

triple88a 03-16-2012 01:51 AM

I don't really dig carrots.

Wasn't Mercedes playing with using steam in a hybrid a few years ago? Not sure if it ever took off.
